Meijer Digital is the eCommerce arm of Meijer, focused on delivering exceptional grocery pickup and delivery experiences through our website and mobile app. As the Principal Engineer for Digital DevOps, you will play a strategic role in shaping the future of our DevOps capabilities. This position is about driving automation, scalability, and resiliency across a multi-cloud environment. You'll partner with over 30 agile teams to enable faster, more reliable delivery of features and services that power our digital customer experience. You will help drive the DevOps strategy and architecture across Digital and collaborate closely with principal engineers and architects across platforms. If you're passionate about engineering excellence, automation, and building systems that scale-and you still love rolling up your sleeves and committing code-this is the role for you.

Position will follow our hybrid schedule: Monday-Wednesday in office, Thursday-Friday remote. Fully remote requests will not be considered.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Lead the design and implementation of advanced automation that improves developer experience, accelerates delivery, and increases platform resiliency.
  • Partner with platform and architecture teams on multi cloud strategies (Azure and GCP)-collaborating on design and supporting execution to enhance resiliency and availability.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines leveraging GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps, driving secure, scalable, and repeatable delivery patterns.
  • Mature GitOps practices using Argo CD (Canary, Blue/Green) and Kubernetes for deployment automation.
  • Write code-not just YAML. Develop scripts and tooling (PowerShell, Python, Bash, etc.) to automate repetitive tasks and optimize workflows. If you've ever said, "I can script that," you'll feel right at home.
  • Unlock developer self-service: create "golden path" templates and automation so teams can quickly bootstrap new repos, pipelines, and containers while adhering to standards.
  • Serve as a Git guru - branching strategies, PR quality gates, and repo governance are your playground.
  • Build production ready POCs that validate patterns and can be adopted broadly by delivery teams.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams across Digital to ensure DevOps best practices are embedded in their delivery processes.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the DevOps team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Support critical release activities, ensuring smooth, reliable deployments.
  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities; find a path forward in ambiguous situations and implement solutions without needing explicit direction.
  • Conduct industry research to evaluate emerging tools, technologies, and processes.
  • Continuously evolve tooling, guardrails, and documentation to improve efficiency, security, and reliability across Digital.
  • Advocate for non-functional requirements (NFRs) such as security, reliability, performance, maintainability, scalability, and usability.
  • Foster an organization wide network of DevOps practitioners-share knowledge, align standards, and learn from other lines of business across Meijer.
  • Advocate for and lead the responsible use of AI tools such as GitHub Copilot to boost developer productivity while maintaining high quality code and coding standards.

What You Bring with You (Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in DevOps or platform engineering roles, with a strong software engineering foundation.
  • Proven expertise with:
    • Kubernetes (K8S)
    • GitOps expertise (Argo CD preferred).
    • GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps Pipelines
    • Azure PaaS (Function Apps, App Services, Cosmos DB, Data Factory); GCP experience preferred. Multi-cloud exposure is a plus.
    • Infrastructure as Code (YAML, Terraform).
  • Strong scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, Bash) and ability to build automation from the ground up.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, distributed systems in a multi-cloud environment.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD principles, release management, and agile delivery practices (SAFe experience preferred).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across multiple teams.
  • Git expert: branching strategies, code review workflows, repo governance, and automation around PR quality gates.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills to be able to interact across multiple teams within the Digital organization; able to influence without authority and work effectively with engineers, product, and architecture.
  • Advanced knowledge of software development best practices.
  • Technical team leadership experience.
  • Curious and inquisitive mind with a passion for uncovering the 'why' behind technical challenges.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to use data to uncover root causes, operate effectively amid ambiguity, and drive solutions in complex, multi team environments.
  • Some Platform Engineering experience preferred:
    • Experience building internal developer platform capabilities (paved roads, templates/generators, self service provisioning, standards/guardrails).
    • Authoring and maintaining Helm charts for shared platform components; Argo CD app of apps or multi env patterns.
    • Designing reusable Terraform modules for Azure & GCP
    • Familiarity with identity & secrets patterns (e.g., Azure Key Vault, workload identity federation across Azure/GCP).
    • (Nice to have) Policy as code/gov experience (e.g., Azure Policy, OPA/Gatekeeper/Kyverno or equivalent).
  • Bonus: Kafka, GraphQL, Temporal, LaunchDarkly, SonarQube, and mobile app (iOS/Android) release processes.

Why Join Us:

  • Lead strategic DevOps initiatives that materially improve developer velocity and product resiliency.
  • Work with modern cloud, container, and automation technologies in a multi cloud setting.
  • Collaborate with talented teams driving innovation in digital commerce at scale.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits with a focus on work-life balance.
