The R&D- Technician II provides laboratory and application support for maintenance of business activities within the Industrial Wood business. This role is responsible for preparing batches, conducting coating applications, performing product testing, maintaining laboratory equipment, and supporting manufacturing and customer trial activities. The R&D- Technician II works closely with technical teams to generate reliable test data, evaluate product performance, and support existing products, manufacturing needs, and customer satisfaction.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.

This role is not remote/hybrid. This role will report to Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 6745 Miller Road, Brecksville, OH 44141.

  • Prepare laboratory batches, blends, and product samples according to established formulations and procedures.
  • Conduct coating applications using laboratory and production-scale application equipment as needed.
  • Prepare test panels and substrates for product evaluations and performance testing.
  • Perform routine physical, performance, and application testing in accordance with established procedures and test methods.
  • Accurately record and report test results, observations, batch records, and laboratory data.
  • Support maintenance of business projects through timely batch preparation, testing, application work, and sample submissions.
  • Assist chemists and technologists with product evaluations, reformulations, manufacturing support activities, and customer trial preparation.
  • Operate, clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory and application equipment.
  • Maintain laboratory inventories, raw materials, testing panels, supplies, and housekeeping standards.
  • Support manufacturing and customer trial activities through sample preparation, application testing, and data collection.
  • Assist with troubleshooting activities by performing testing, collecting data, and documenting results.
  • Meet established timelines for assigned laboratory, application, and testing activities.
  • Maintain compliance with all company safety standards, environmental requirements, and laboratory procedures.

Minimum Requirements
* Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status)
* Must be at least 18 years of age
* Must have a High School Diploma or GED
* 6 months of laboratory, manufacturing, coatings, quality, or related technical experience
* Experience following standard operating procedures and test methods
* Experience with batch preparation, sample preparation, or laboratory operations

Preferred Qualifications
* Associate or Bachelor's Degree in a STEM-related discipline
* Technical training in coatings application, manufacturing processes, or laboratory operations
* Experience preparing paint or coatings batches
* Experience operating coating application equipment
* Experience performing physical and performance testing of coatings
* Experience supporting manufacturing operations or customer trials
* Experience with industrial wood coatings or OEM coatings
* Experience with waterborne coating systems
