Position Summary

KEMRON Environmental Services, Inc. is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to support environmental remediation and construction projects in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

The Heavy Equipment Operator safely and efficiently operates a variety of heavy equipment, including cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. Equipment is used to excavate, load, grade, and move dirt, gravel, contaminated soil, and other materials.

The Heavy Equipment Operator may read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans and perform routine adjustments, lubrication, and emergency repairs to assigned equipment. This position reports to the Remedial Project Manager and supports activities including road and site construction, clearing and grubbing, excavation of contaminated soil, remediation activities, grading, and loading trucks in accordance with applicable environmental and safety procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate multiple types of heavy equipment of various sizes and weights and establish required grades and cuts within acceptable tolerances
  • Follow daily procedures and protocols established through jobsite orientations, training, and project requirements
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and report defects or needed repairs to the supervisor
  • Maintain assigned equipment in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic-control devices
  • Control traffic at work sites by flagging and directing traffic through work areas, as required or assigned
  • Assist laborers and/or technicians as requested by supervisors or foremen to support project activities and maintain safe and efficient site operations
  • Complete required training in shoring and sloping in accordance with OSHA requirements, KEMRON SOPs, and applicable military safety requirements
  • Follow required safety and incident-reporting procedures and promptly report concerns to the Foreman, Safety Director, or HR Manager
Physical Work Activities and Exposure
  • Must have sufficient visual ability, coordination, and judgment to safely operate equipment using hand and foot controls simultaneously
  • Must be able to perform complex equipment-operating tasks and work safely alongside other trades and project personnel with limited supervision
  • Must remain alert and observant of surrounding personnel, equipment, and site conditions
  • Work is regularly performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, and near moving mechanical equipment
  • May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, dust, asphalt, and hazardous materials
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Work in environments where noise levels are frequently loud
  • Frequently sit, talk, and listen
  • Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, equipment, and controls
  • Reach with hands and arms
  • Walk short distances, including over uneven terrain
  • Must successfully complete required medical monitoring necessary to work while using respiratory protection, including air-purifying and supplied-air respirators
  • Understand and follow KEMRON SOPs applicable to assigned tasks
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment under varying work and site conditions
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in environmental remediation and construction
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with heavy-equipment operations
  • Ability to perform manual work requiring periods of significant physical exertion and exposure to varying or adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work from construction specifications, plans, or blueprints
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to maintain dependable and consistent attendance
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience operating heavy equipment, including at least two (2) years related to environmental construction
  • Sufficient education to perform required arithmetic calculations and complete written documentation, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Current 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training required
  • Current 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training required, as applicable
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 training required when applicable to the worksite
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid and appropriate state driver's license with CDL endorsement, with no active violations within the previous three (3) years
  • Must maintain a driving record acceptable to KEMRON's insurance carrier and qualify to operate company vehicles
  • Must review, understand, and acknowledge applicable Corporate and project-specific Health and Safety Plans
  • Sloping and shoring training required
  • Equipment Operator Safety Training required
