Job Summary

Transportation Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Transportation Services Shop Manager! This position is responsible for overseeing shop operations for all preventative maintenance, required inspections and repairs of university owned light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles. This includes inspections, diagnostics, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary, while using the proper equipment and tools. This position supervises all Equipment Technicians and reports to the Senior Fleet Manager.

Transportation Services provides comprehensive transit, fleet management, and maintenance to serve the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at the University of Colorado Boulder. The University of Colorado vehicle fleet numbers over 600; a robust transit system moving 1.4 million riders per year at the University of Colorado-Boulder campus; and guidance for driver operations for campuses located in Aurora, Boulder, and Denver.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Garage Management

Shop Equipment

  • Ensure technicians have the proper tools to perform their jobs, including hand tools, specialty equipment and lifts. Run depreciation schedules of large equipment and projected replacement dates.
  • Handle the required maintenance, inspections and certifications of all equipment (e.g lifts).
  • Manage the inventory, purchase and disposal of all lubricants and solvents necessary to properly maintain and repair vehicles.
  • Run diagnostic software updates and licensures for light and heavy-duty vendors.
  • Ensure all CU vehicles have first aid kits, accident and insurance forms, and appropriate safety equipment.
  • Ensure the shop has complete inventory of other materials and supplies such as gloves, spill kits, and cleaning materials.

Financial

  • Review monthly budget reports on shop productivity with the Transportation Accountant and Fleet Manager.
  • Manage the purchase order process when required, coordinating with the Office Manager and Fleet Coordinator.
  • Review third-party invoices for completeness and accuracy before handing them off to the Office Manager for payment.

Procedures

  • Train employees on safe practices associated with their typical work environments including standard methodologies for Battery Electric Bus maintenance.
  • Ensure all techs are fully trained to handle spills, including handling hazardous materials.
  • Research new operational techniques, methods, and equipment, and recommend their application.
  • Stay familiar with new and expanded third-party commercial repair shops in the Denver Metropolitan Area.
  • Stay apprised of changes in standard processes, including new vendors and suppliers.

Personnel Management

General Supervision

  • Be the direct supervisor to all technicians. Conduct annual performance evaluations, develop performance plans with technicians, conduct regular 1:1s and mentoring sessions. Approve or deny all sick and paid time off, and time sheets.
  • Regularly evaluate total person hours needed to perform required preventative maintenance and repairs. Make recommendations on changes to the number of technicians needed on the team.
  • Perform urgent diagnostic and repair needs when other technicians are out of the shop on leave.
  • Be the Transportation Services lead in the recruitment, hiring and onboarding process for new technicians.

Work Assignments

  • In collaboration with the Fleet Coordinator, determine which vehicles can be serviced in-house and which must be brought to third-party commercial repair shops.
  • Assist Fleet Coordinator in developing a weekly list of in-house light-duty and heavy-duty preventative maintenance and repairs. Include the approximate number of technician hours required for each repair.
  • Communicate with the Fleet Coordinator to determine when to conduct required annual Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on Commercial Motor Vehicles.
  • Develop weekly workplans for technicians, including calendar entries from the Fleet Coordinator. Ensure all technicians have substantial work to meet billable hour goals.
  • Monitor workplan and technician progress throughout the week and month. Adjust technician workplans as needed to respond to unexpected emergencies or staff absences.
  • Collaborating with Fleet Coordinator, review technician-generated Work Orders for accuracy and completeness. Finish or close Work Orders in AssetWorks prior to the month-end.

Operations

  • Lead the team response of on-the-road breakdown calls and other emergency situations. Available by the assigned shop cell phone to assist stranded motorists in emergency situations, including providing information or coordinating tow calls during business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Conduct periodic safety training courses to ensure job-safe practices are followed.
  • Serve as primary quality control for work completed by third-party commercial repair shops. Lead discussion and/or negotiations with these shops, as needed.
  • Meet weekly with the Transit Manager to review downed buses. Take input from Transit Manager on bus needs for the week.

"On The Floor" Maintenance and Repairs

Diagnostics

  • Use various proprietary diagnostic software to diagnose, examine, and investigate heavy duty and light duty electric vehicles to determine causes of defective operation of electrical components, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, passenger lift assemblies, battery coolant systems, air conditioning systems, and other EV components.
  • Possess skill in recognizing and reporting faulty and abnormally functioning components on diesel, gasoline, and electric-powered equipment, including hydraulic systems.
  • Serve as the final decision maker for difficult to diagnose vehicles. Support all techs in diagnostic concerns.

Repairs

  • Repair mechanical issues on University vehicles using the necessary tools and diagnostic equipment, including various diagnostic computer programs.
  • Perform repairs to the vehicle manufacturers' specifications, including engines, transmissions, clutches, drive-lines, differentials, steering and suspensions, fuel and ignition systems, exhaust systems (including regeneration systems), intake systems, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, hydraulic liftgates, and other mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Repair battery electric buses, including removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary. This includes batteries, electrical points, electrical conduits and wiring, and electric motor drive trains.
  • Follow strict safety procedures for EV vehicles.
  • Support all technicians on difficult and unusual repairs. Make final decisions on repairs, procedures, and processes.
  • Actively and continuously improve professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in training sessions and educational seminars.

What You Should Know

This in-person position has an expected work schedule of Monday - Friday during regular business hours, and will be on-call nights & weekends to provide support for broken vehicles.


What We Can Offer

The salary for this role is $90,000 annually. Relocation assistance is available per department guidelines.

What We Require

  • 5 years of relevant experience. A combination of relevant education and experience equivalent to 5 years is also acceptable.
  • Previous experience supervising mechanics and shop operations.
  • Heavy-duty vehicle repair experience.
  • Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • A working understanding of Asset Works.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Bus repair experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electric vehicles.
  • Knowledge of EV operation and EV safety practices.
  • ASE EV certifications or training.
  • DOT inspection certification.
  • DOT air brake inspection certification.
  • Refrigeration recovery and repair certification EPA sec 609.
