Position Summary The Youth Program Assistant is a Salvationist who supports the leadership, development, and growth of youth, family, and outreach ministries at the El Cajon Corps and East County Red Shield. This role helps cultivate ministries that evangelize, disciple, and nurture spiritual growth while connecting community program participants to the worshipping life of the Corps. Working alongside corps leadership, the Youth Program Assistant provides support for youth programs, discipleship groups, camps, seasonal initiatives, special events, family services, ARC integration efforts, and other ministry opportunities as assigned. As a ministry leader, the incumbent must demonstrate a vibrant Christian faith, uphold the doctrines and mission of The Salvation Army, and serve as a Christ-centered example within the Corps and the wider community. Essential Functions
- Assist in the development, coordination, and growth of youth ministries that evangelize, disciple, and foster the spiritual development of children, youth, and young adults.
- Plan, organize, and lead youth programs and activities, including Sunday School, teen ministries, Bible studies, discipleship groups, Vacation Bible School, camps, retreats, conferences, and character-building programs.
- Conduct or assist with worship services, devotions, chapel programs, midweek ministries, and other opportunities for spiritual growth and Christian education.
- Build positive, Christ-centered relationships with children, youth, families, volunteers, and program participants, encouraging active involvement in the worship and ministry life of the Corps.
- Serve as a bridge between community-based programs, family services, and congregational ministries, creating pathways for participants to engage in Corps programs and spiritual development opportunities.
- Assist in the planning, promotion, and execution of special events, outreach initiatives, community service projects, seasonal ministries, and Corps-wide activities, including Easter, Back-to-School, Christmas programs, toy drives, food drives, Angel Tree, and kettle campaigns.
- Support the administration and operation of Corps, Red Shield, Family Services, youth, and seasonal programs as assigned.
- Recruit, train, coordinate, and supervise volunteers in support of Corps ministries and community programs.
- Assist with fundraising efforts, grant-supported activities, and special campaigns that support youth and Corps ministries.
- Maintain accurate program, statistical, financial, and participant records; prepare reports and documentation as required by Corps and Divisional Headquarters policies.
- Ensure sound stewardship of Corps resources by supporting fiscal accountability, safeguarding assets, maintaining proper records, and adhering to Salvation Army policies and procedures.
- Utilize computer systems and software to maintain records, enter data, prepare correspondence, create promotional materials, and support Corps operations.
- Provide administrative support, including answering telephones, responding to inquiries, preparing communications, filing documents, and assisting clients and visitors as needed.
- Support social service ministries, including food distribution, emergency assistance, homeless outreach, and related programs as assigned.
- Ensure compliance with Protecting the Mission policies and all Salvation Army standards related to child safety, vulnerable adult protection, and program operations.
- Maintain positive community relations by representing The Salvation Army with professionalism, integrity, and a Christ-centered witness.
- Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, camps, conferences, worship services, and special events as required by ministry needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Corps Officers.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in both office and program settings, with exposure to interruptions, noise, multiple deadlines, and frequent interaction with diverse groups of people.
- Requires extended periods of sitting at a computer and telephone, as well as physical activity including walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
- Requires strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to work collaboratively, accept feedback, and maintain confidentiality.
- Position requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle (automobile or passenger van) and to travel, including occasional overnight or out-of-state trips by car or air.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a committed Christian in agreement with The Salvation Army's mission, doctrine, and practices.
- High school diploma or GED required; college coursework in youth ministry, education, or a related field preferred.
- At least two (2) years of experience in youth ministry or working with young people; leadership in Salvation Army youth programs strongly preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with computers and social media.
- Ability to teach, lead by example, and work effectively as part of a team.
- Must be able to meet physical demands of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed.
- Must possess (or obtain within 30 days) a Food Handler's Card.
- Must pass a criminal background check and remain current in Protecting the Mission training and child safety requirements.
