Job Summary

The Director of AI Governance is responsible for leading the Institute's AI Governance program by establishing policies, governance frameworks, and oversight processes for the responsible use of AI across academic, research, and administrative functions. This role oversees the evaluation, approval, and monitoring of AI technologies; ensures compliance with institutional, regulatory, and risk management requirements; and serves as an integrated part of the Institute's broader Data Governance and Information Governance programs.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Lead and administer the Institute's AI Governance Program, establishing program priorities, operational plans, governance processes, and performance measures that support responsible AI adoption across academic, research, and administrative functions.

Job Duty 2 -
Direct the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of AI governance policies, standards, procedures, guiding principles, and program documentation, informed by regulatory and legal developments monitored by the Office of General Counsel, and ensuring alignment with institutional objectives and leading practices.

Job Duty 3 -
Establish and manage the Institute's AI governance framework and governance structure, including oversight committees, working groups, stakeholder roles, decision authorities, and accountability mechanisms.

Job Duty 4 -
Oversee the evaluation, approval, and monitoring processes for AI systems, tools, and use cases, partnering with Information Security, Privacy, Procurement, Legal Counsel, Risk Management, and business stakeholders on risk assessment and appropriate use, and with the Institute's AI development and automation teams to ensure governance is embedded from design through deployment.

Job Duty 5 -
Direct the operation of the Institute-wide inventory of AI systems, tools, models, and use cases, ensuring accurate documentation, transparency, reporting, and adherence to governance requirements.

Job Duty 6 -
Lead governance assessments, compliance monitoring, issue management, exception reviews, remediation activities, and continuous improvement efforts to strengthen the effectiveness and maturity of the AI governance program.

Job Duty 7 -
Monitor emerging regulatory requirements, audit findings, industry standards, and evolving AI risks, translating findings into program enhancements, governance controls, and institutional guidance.

Job Duty 8 -
Develop and deliver AI governance communications, training, and stakeholder engagement programs, while building a network of governance liaisons across academic, research, and administrative units to support consistent implementation of governance practices.

Job Duty 9 -
Lead and develop assigned staff and governance resources by establishing goals, managing workloads and performance, facilitating governance committees and working groups, and preparing executive updates. Serve as a point of coordination for questions, concerns, and incidents involving AI systems.

Job Duty 10 -
Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience building a governance program, framework, or function from the ground up, rather than operating within an already-established structure.
Experience developing institutional policy, standards, or procedural frameworks, including navigating review and approval through executive stakeholders.
Experience partnering with legal, cyber security, privacy, or procurement functions to evaluate and manage technology or vendor risk.
Familiarity with AI, machine learning, or generative AI technologies sufficient to evaluate tools, use cases, and associated risks.
Experience designing or delivering training, education, or awareness programs across a large, decentralized organization.
Experience supporting higher education, research, government, or another large, mission-driven enterprise environment.

Proposed Salary

$147,500 to $170,000 depending on experience and preferred skills.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of AI-specific risk domains, such as bias, transparency, explainability, reliability, and performance degradation over time.
Strong understanding of the AI lifecycle sufficient to identify where governance checkpoints apply and which partner functions hold responsibility at each stage.
Understanding of vendor, contractual, and data-use risks associated with AI capabilities embedded in third-party products and services, sufficient to coordinate review with partner functions.
Working knowledge of how data quality, provenance, categorization, and access controls affect the trustworthiness of AI systems.
Knowledge of higher education operating models, including shared governance, academic freedom, and decentralized decision-making.
Proficiency in strategic planning and program management, with the ability to establish, scale, and mature a program as institutional needs, technologies, and risks evolve.
Ability to apply proportional, risk-based judgment that enables innovation while maintaining appropriate safeguards, including in the absence of settled regulation or precedent.
Proficiency in change management and adoption strategies that drive behavior change across diverse populations.
Ability to earn credibility with faculty, researchers, technologists, and executives, and to influence outcomes without direct authority.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and risk concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with discretion in handling sensitive information.
