Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Media Relations Senior Manager.

In this role, the successful candidate The Media Relations Senior Manager specifically responsible for Perlmutter Cancer Center (PCC), emergency medicine, psychiatry, infectious disease and immunology, and pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine is a member of the Media Relations Team within the Communications, Marketing, Government and Community Affairs (CMGCA) department. The position will be part of a team focused on successfully working with the news media and internal communications partners to effectively promote NYULHs exceptional patient care, research, and education. This position will report to the Director of Clinical Media Relations and play a key role assisting with managing external agency support for earned media opportunities in cancer. The Senior Manager will also support certain management tasks that directly support the Directors management of certain key responsibilities to clinical leadership and the team.

Job Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Director of Clinical Media Relations, this position will play a crucial role in helping to promote and reinforce NYULHs commitment to providing the best outcomes in patient care and research. This position will play a lead role in executing a coordinated strategy to effectively share these impactful stories utilizing earned and owned media, including closely tracking success through media monitoring. PCC is an expansive and robust beat that requires highlighting a variety of important specialties, including hematology oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology and more as the institution works aggressively to elevate the status of the fast-growing PCC and support its leadership. Part of these responsibilities include developing and deploying an effective strategy to support key academic conferences like ASCO, AACR, ASH, ASTRO, SABCS and more as well as looking for cross collaborations with key external parters that can advance PCCs mission. This position, while centered in media, will often require work with outside cancer and medical organizations to help foster relationships that will lead to media coverage. This position will also support other assigned clinical areas and coordinate closely with colleagues across the department, most notably colleagues assigned to PCC, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, and Pulmonology, to ensure opportunities to amplify these stories are maximized through social media, NYULHs news website, internal communications and more. They will also participate in an effective media pitching strategy, leveraging agency support to respond to media inquiries on a variety of topics. This person will also support certain management tasks, such as overseeing PR agencies dedicated to support PCC and media relations projects and events. They will be responsible for measuring the success of the agencies work product, maximizing their efforts for PCC and the full clinical media team. In consultation with the Director of Clinical Media Relations, this person will be responsible for managing certain important clinical specialties, finding, developing and placing patient care and other stories with positive outcomes that highlight NYU Langones exceptional care in earned and owned media. This person will also support the director with certain other responsibilities as assigned, in support of their relationships with clinical leaders and management of the broader team.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Strategic Planning and Collaboration:

  • Support colleagues across the department and the leadership of assigned clinical specialties as a trusted communications and marketing advisor that understands their visions and objectives, strategically helps them shape their agenda, and proactively deploys aligned marketing and communications tactics.
  • Play a vital role in triaging and executing requests for department support, partnering with teams across CMGCA.

  • Manage cross-functional teams including external agency for high visibility announcements. Manage press conferences and media roundtables, incorporating input from various clinical leadership and key partners.

  • May support the director across several areas as needed.

  • Support development and implementation of effective and compelling communications and media relations strategies around clinical priorities, including events and press conferences.

Media Relations:

  • Develop media materials, including stories, media advisories, fact sheets, op-eds, external key messages and positioning statements for service lines for distribution to news media and to post to NYULHs news site.

  • Maintain and foster strong relationships with members of the news media, particularly in the fields of medical science.

  • Ensure timely and accurate responses to media inquiries, serving as a suitable spokesperson and subject matter advisor if called upon.

  • Facilitate media training, developing talking points and briefings as needed for physicians and leadership.

  • Actively work to identify new media outlets and channels where PCC is not showing up and identify strategies to enhance coverage, including podcasts, YouTube series, key morning newsletters, and others.

  • Stay up to date on all developments across assigned clinical departments.

  • Closely track assignments, progress, and associated metrics; share those as appropriate for update on a master editorial calendar.

  • Leverage media tracking tools to measure and define success compared to other institutions in specialty areas. Also track and understand web traffic on pages that house stories created by the media teams (e.g., NewsHub)

  • Monitor key metrics and outcomes to gauge the effectiveness of the media relations strategy; adapt strategies based on outcomes.

  • Work respectfully and effectively with patients and their families to obtain proper consent forms as appropriate and ensure they are respected and supported in any media efforts.

Operational Excellence:

  • Efficiently and effectively execute goals and priorities while adhering to organizational standards for delivering excellent work.

  • Champion NYULHs strong continuous improvement culture, demonstrating a willingness to test-and-learn.

  • Ensure seamless communication alignment within a complex institution encompassing multiple campuses and geographic regions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of public and media relations experience, including proactively pitching media and issues management
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, or related field
  • Strong working knowledge of clinical programs
  • Exceptional ability to work effectively with top leadership, triage large workloads, and elevate matters as needed.
  • Excellent writer, editor, and verbal communicator; strong medical writing experience
  • Experience executing high profile public and media relations programs, both proactive and reactive
  • Experience with building and managing press and media relationships
  • Familiarity project management and managing PR agencies
  • Some event and outreach planning
  • Excellent understanding of media relations and the media landscape in the US
  • Comfortable with digital content channels, including but not limited to social media
  • Strong PPT or Keynote user; good working knowledge of online collaboration tools
  • Ability to make decisions quickly within high pressure situations and react quickly and appropriately to unexpected media coverage
  • Strong interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration and ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally

Preferred Qualifications:

  • New York-specific media relations experience
  • Experience managing staff
  • Bilingualism is an asset (Spanish/English)

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
