The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications from and nominations of tenured faculty members for the position of Chair of the Department of History. This is a search internal to the University. This twelve-month appointment is anticipated to begin July 1, 2027. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Primary Purpose of Department
The Department of History employs 29 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members. Degree programs include the B.A. in History, with approximately 175 majors, and the M.A. in History, with nearly 50 students. The M.A. program also features a concentration in Public History.
The History department works closely with departments, programs, and centers across the University, including Africana Studies, American Studies, Capitalism Studies, the David R. Ravin School of Architecture, Global Studies, Latin American Studies, Religious Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies. It also houses two journals: The Journal of Urban History and The Latin Americanist.

The College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences focuses on student-centered teaching, innovative research, and community collaborations that prepare our graduates to help solve the pressing problems of our world today. Our supportive faculty and staff strive to engage with students to gain real-world experience, explore their unique goals, and thrive. As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, The College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 18 units, 13 interdisciplinary programs, and 7 applied centers. The College offers 5 doctoral degrees, 16 master's degrees, 17 graduate certificates, 26 undergraduate degrees, 44 undergraduate minors, 14 undergraduate certificates, 18 graduate early-entry programs, and 15 honors programs.

Description of Work
Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Department Chair is responsible for the daily operation of the department and its academic programs and will promote excellence in teaching, research, service, and community engagement. The Chair's responsibilities require leadership and mentoring of faculty and staff; coordination of instruction and curriculum; and advocacy for the department at the College, University, and community levels. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to foster a positive and collegial work environment and to support the success of the department's students, staff, and faculty.
Minimum Experience/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must:

  • Hold a doctoral degree in History or a related field from an accredited institution;
  • Hold the rank of tenured associate professor or professor with an appointment at UNC Charlotte;
  • Have an exemplary record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate to rank;
  • Demonstrate the potential for successful administrative leadership, including effective communication, management, planning, curriculum development, and decision-making;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to mentoring faculty and supporting the education and success of the department's student;
  • Demonstrate capacity to advocate effectively for the department at the College and University levels;
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in community engagement; and
  • Demonstrate experience with, or plans for, securing external funding in support of research and departmental programs.


Desired Qualifications:
Desired qualifications include previous administrative experience; experience mentoring faculty and graduate students; the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary programs, departments, and centers; demonstrated success in securing extramural research funding and/or facilitating faculty efforts to seek external grant support; a record of fostering a positive and collaborative work environment; and a commitment to advancing the University's outreach and community-engagement mission.
