The Washington, DC office of SmithGroupis looking for anIntermediate Plumbing Designerto join our team.



Working with us, you will:



  • Perform analysis, design and documentation of plumbing systems.
  • Produce and coordinate a complete set of construction documents for permitting and bidding of plumbing design and engineering projects.
  • Coordinate specifications with drawings to meet project requirements.
  • Visit construction sites as required for observation, answer contractor questions, and represent the owner in preparing punch lists.
  • Determine procedures to design, develop, and document project or system based on an evaluation of its unique needs and constraints.
  • Advance designs developed by others and assess design requirements.
  • Have knowledge of basic drawing details and the ability to research more complex details.
  • Manage aspects of plumbing projects with assistance of senior plumbing designer.
  • Coordinate and review the work of other designers and interns assigned to projects.
  • Determine a level of effort required for a given assignment and provide input on scheduling.
  • Mentor and train graduate engineers, designers, and interns.



An ideal candidate has:



  • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related field from a technical school or college.
  • 3+ years of experience with CAD/Revit and plumbing system design.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing codes and design standards.
  • An understanding of lab and medical gas system designs, preferred.
  • Membership in the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) preferred.
  • The ability to discern and apply proper engineering design approaches to systems in a variety of building types.
  • A working knowledge of architectural concepts and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines, team members, consultants and clients.
  • Proficiency in current design software (CAD, Revit, etc.), Microsoft Office, and PDF software (Adobe/Bluebeam).
  • LEED Green Associate accreditation preferred.

While we may ultimately pay more or less than a posted salary range, at the time of posting the anticipated salary range for this position is $32.21 to $39.90 per hour.
