THE POSITION

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Hollidaysburg Veterans' Home is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Food Service Worker 1 to join our team and provide culinary services in our long-term care facility for veterans and their spouses. This role keeps daily operations running smoothly and helps create a welcoming dining atmosphere. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports daily meal preparation and service in a clean and organized environment. The work helps ensure residents receive meals that meet their dietary needs. As a Food Service Worker 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare food items, beverages, and nourishments using correct portions
  • Tray Assembly: Assemble trays according to diet requirements and GeriMenu instructions
  • Cart Operations: Load, transport, and unload food carts for snacks, meals, and beverages
  • Sanitation Tasks: Clean dishes, equipment, furniture, floors, and food preparation areas
  • Record Keeping: Record inventories, temperatures, meal counts, and other required information
  • Safety Procedures: Follow safety rules, report hazards, and use protective equipment when needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Temporary, part-time employment, 40 hours/biweekly
    • This position will last up to 9 months with the possibility of being hired as a permanent part-time or full-time employee.
  • Work schedule will vary. Hours may be scheduled as follows:
    • 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM
    • 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
    • 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Willing and able to work in Duncansville, Blair County, Pennsylvania
  • Willing and able to work a part-time schedule
  • Willing and able to work varied hours with rotating days and weekends
  • Food service experience in an assisted living facility, nursing home, hospital, restaurant, or other food service operation
  • Work experience interacting with patients, residents, or customers while serving food/cleaning in patient/resident rooms or a dining room setting
  • Work experience with food safety and sanitation in a dietary department
  • Experience in the following tasks:
    • Cleaning, washing, peeling, slicing, and dicing food items
    • Using kitchen equipment such as VCM, food processor, tabletop chopper, and garbage disposal
    • Chopping, dicing, and slicing meats, poultry, fish, and cheeses
    • Heating simple foods such as eggs, sandwiches, and hamburgers
    • Preparing sandwiches, assembling salads, and serving portions, including desserts
    • Plating and serving meals from hot food cart
    • Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, utensils, dishes, pots, pans, work surfaces, and other kitchen items
    • Transporting and assisting in loading and unloading food delivery trucks from kitchen and dining rooms
    • Transporting food and supplies to and from freezers, refrigerators, and storeroom
    • Selective menu, taking food orders, waitressing, and dining room service
    • Food cart and dining room serving area set up
    • Reading meal and tray tickets or tags
    • Tray assembly and working on a tray line
    • Operating commercial kitchen equipment

Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
