Job Overview
The R&D Prototype Machinist is responsible for supporting prototype fabrication, laboratory operations, engineering testing, and technical support activities within the R&D Machine Shop and Engineering Laboratory. This position requires a hands-on machinist capabe of operation CNC and manual machining equipment, building prototypes, preparing test samples, supporting engineering tests, and working closely with engineers on product development activities. Essential Responsibilities
* Set up and operate CNC and manual machining equipment to manufacture prototype parts, tooling, fixtures, and development components.
* Assist with CNC programming, setup, and process development under general supervision. * Fabricate, modify, repair, and assemble prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and test equipment. * Produce components from engineering drawings, CAD models, sketches, and verbal instructions. * Prepare test samples, assemblies, cables, and hardware for engineering and qualification testing. * Build, modify, and support test fixtures and test setups. * Support engineering testing activities, including test setup, execution, troubleshooting, and documentation. * Work with engineers to evaluate designs, implement changes, and improve manufacturability. * Inspect completed work using precision measuring instruments to verify compliance with specifications. * Maintain machine shop and laboratory equipment, tooling, and work areas in a safe and organized condition. * Assist in maintaining tooling, consumables, materials, and supplies required to support machine shop and laboratory operations. * Support Manufacturing and Operations through prototype fabrication, tooling support, troubleshooting, and special projects as needed. * Provide machining and fabrication support to production operations during periods of increased demand or business need. * Perform other related duties supporting Engineering, R&D, Testing, Manufacturing, and Operations. Qualifications
* Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in machining, prototype fabrication, manufacturing, tool room, laboratory, or related technical environments. * Experience operating CNC machining equipment, including setup and basic programming adjustments. * Strong proficiency operating manual mills, lathes, saws, drill presses, grinders, and related shop equipment. * Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, dimensions, and tolerances. * Experience fabricating prototypes, fixtures, tooling, and low-volume components. * Familiarity with precision measuring and inspection equipment, including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges. * Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. * Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel. * Good organizational and communication skills. * Commitment to safety, quality, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
