Pharmacy Technician II - RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex technical, clerical, and medication repackaging procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional pharmacy standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during inventory cycles, ensuring accurate medication labeling, delivering age-specific care support, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the pharmacy purchasing department.

A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician II may include:

• Prepares and repackages oral and liquid medications for inpatient use, clearly explains the process, and positions supplies to adhere to pharmacy safety standards
• Operates automated packaging machines, computers, and inventory software necessary to ensure a safe and accurate medication distribution procedure
• Assist pharmacy coordinators and buyers during order fulfillment by putting away deliveries, restocking supplies, or monitoring stock levels
• Sets up inventory tracking logs and essential files following department policy, handles short-dated items, and reviews records to assist with recall management
• Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts medication repackaging equipment, and reports mechanical failures or technical problems immediately to leadership
• Monitors and calls out backordered medications, alerting the pharmacy management team immediately to any changes in product availability or stock conditions
• Utilizes electronic databases and inventory tracking systems to enter accurately identified and verified data of products, and retrieves old logs when necessary
• Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy procurement protocols including repackaging techniques, safety guidelines, and proper inventory rotation methods
• Collaborates professionally in a hospital pharmacy environment, training technicians or students and working in close cooperation with leadership and internal departments
• Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician II opportunity:

• Graduate with a High School Diploma or equivalent credential
• Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Must hold and maintain active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy
• Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required within 6 months of employment
• Minimum of 1 year of dedicated hospital pharmacy technician experience is required
• Demonstrated technical proficiency in operating and troubleshooting medication repackaging machinery
• Strong baseline knowledge of medical acronyms, expiration date tracking, and hospital stock rotation procedures
• Prior professional experience working directly within a pharmacy purchasing or inventory management role is preferred
• Available to work full-time Monday through Friday day shift schedule, primarily from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM
