Position Summary:

Working under the general direction of the Department of Pathology / Laboratory Director and Phlebotomy Supervisor, this position performs duties delegated by the Director under CLIA Sect. 493.1445(a). Provides receiving, processing, routing and / or storage of specimens submitted from all areas of the hospital. Also provides support and assistance with a variety of related laboratory tasks within the specimen processing area. Works as part of the Clinical Pathology team in fulfilling department objectives.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Process patient orders for outpatient appointments in main lab phlebotomy. Reviews orders for accuracy and completeness. Receives, complete order entry electronic orders into the LIS systems and accurately processes using standard procedures. Orients patients to procedures and exam process.
  • Welcome and greet patients into the lab draw area. Escort and directs the patients. Receives, handles, and transfers phone calls and messages within the department promptly and courteously.
  • Accurately coordinates and collect non-blood specimens and transport specimens to the proper area of laboratory, following specific protocol instructions. Retrieves specimens from the pneumatic tube system for distribution within the laboratory.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives and maintain good employee relations.
  • Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service. Ensures the assigned area is adequately stocked with supplies. Receives supplies and distributes them to the appropriate work area. Acquires and maintains knowledge of various aspects of storage conditions.
  • Maintains orderliness, cleanliness and follows safety practices in work areas. Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and based on frequency, such as maintenance logs and temperature logs.
  • Attends meetings as required.

Qualifications

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Up to one year experience in a hospital laboratory setting preferred, working with clinical laboratory specimens and staff.
