Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
The Chemical Decontamination Process Engineer is an onsite position at Three Mile Island Unit 2 which provides technical and project-management support for the operation of the chemical decontamination plant. The position is responsible for coordinating the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and chemical-process aspects of the system, with support from appropriate discipline specialists.
The engineer reports to the chemical decontamination manager and develops and manages processing schedules, maintenance plans, throughput forecasts, and material logistics. The position also ensures that incoming materials, process effluents, and decontaminated materials meet established acceptance criteria and that operating activities are technically sound, properly planned, and aligned with production objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide integrated technical support for operations of a chemical decontamination plant, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and chemical-process systems. Evaluate operating data, troubleshoot equipment and process issues, coordinate technical support, and develop solutions that improve safety, reliability, throughput, and process effectiveness.
- Plan and manage processing activities, including production schedules, throughput forecasts, maintenance windows, equipment availability, staffing assumptions, material sequencing, and coordination of work needed to meet operating commitments.
- Manage the flow of material through the decontamination process, including verification that incoming material meets system acceptance criteria, prioritization and logistics of backlog material, coordination of staging and movement, and resolution of conditions that could prevent or delay processing.
- Administer product and effluent acceptance requirements, including criteria for process liquids, generated wastes, released materials, and decontaminated components.
- Support equipment reliability and maintenance execution, including preventive and corrective maintenance planning, work-package development, troubleshooting, spare-parts needs, vendor coordination, outage planning, and evaluation of maintenance impacts on production.
- Maintain technical and project controls, including schedules, performance metrics, operating plans, material inventories, risk and issue logs, technical documentation, procedures, system drawings, and status reporting. Lead or support process changes and equipment modifications required to sustain or improve operations.
- Maintain the plant procedure set, ensuring operating, maintenance, sampling, material-handling, and abnormal-condition procedures remain accurate, current with plant configuration and requirements, incorporate operating experience.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical, nuclear, electrical, systems, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated knowledge of industrial chemical-process systems, including pumps, tanks, piping, valves, filtration, ventilation, instrumentation, controls, material handling, and chemical treatment operations.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary technical work and translating engineering, maintenance, material, regulatory, and operating requirements into executable production plans.
- Ability to evaluate operating data, material characterization information, process chemistry, equipment condition, and acceptance criteria to make technically sound recommendations.
- Strong project-management, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage schedules, competing priorities, interfaces, risks, and technical documentation.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed onsite in an industrial chemical-processing and nuclear decommissioning facility with a support office.
- Work will be performed in radiologically controlled, contamination-controlled, chemical-control, and other restricted-access areas.
- The position involves work near operating pumps, tanks, piping systems, process equipment, ventilation systems, instrumentation, and material-handling equipment.
- Work conditions may include elevated noise levels, temperature variations, humidity, wet or uneven surfaces, chemical odors, and limited workspaces.
- Required PPE may include standard industrial safety equipment, chemical-resistant protective equipment, radiological protective clothing, hearing protection, dosimetry, and respiratory protection.
- The normal schedule is expected to be Monday through Thursday on a 4-10 schedule; however, shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, or extended hours may be required to support plant operations.
- Limited travel may be required for training, equipment support, or related project activities.
Job Requirements/Skills
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical and control-system drawings, equipment specifications, procedures, sampling results, characterization data, maintenance records, and technical reports.
- Working knowledge of project scheduling, maintenance planning, material tracking, production forecasting, configuration control, corrective action, and change-management processes.
- Strong commitment to procedural compliance, conservative decision-making, technical rigor, and accurate documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using scheduling, computerized maintenance, work-control, document-management, or material-tracking systems
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to carry up to 15 pounds; handle and reach below shoulder
- Ability to use hands to accomplish tasks as assigned
- Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
- Ability to see close and distance and basic colors/shades
- Ability to work alone, interact with the public, and perform under deadline pressure
- Ability to work outdoor and indoor activities under various conditions

Education
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution.

Required Experience
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience in chemical processing, industrial plant operations, nuclear operations, decommissioning, decontamination, waste treatment, manufacturing, power generation, or a similar technical environment.
- Experience performing technical planning, project coordination, maintenance planning, production scheduling, process engineering, or material-management functions.

Preferred Experience
- Five or more years of relevant industrial experience involving operating process systems and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.
- Experience managing processing schedules, material backlogs, throughput forecasts, equipment maintenance, and production constraints.
- Experience establishing or administering incoming-material, waste, effluent, release, or product acceptance criteria.
- Experience with radioactive-material characterization, radiological decontamination, liquid-waste processing, chemical treatment systems, or nuclear decommissioning.
