Responsibilities
- The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) functions as a laboratory professional who assists other laboratory personnel in specimen collection, specimen receiving, specimen processing, laboratory testing, process improvement, and quality initiatives.
- Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
- Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
- Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
- Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
- Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned.
- Courier duties as assigned.
- Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned.
- Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills and strong customer service skills.
Preferred Job Requirements:
- Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist upon hire.
- Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date.
- Experience working in the clinical setting.
