SUMMARY

Ajax Building Company is seeking a Project Accountant to support the financial management of active construction projects across the Southeast. Working closely with Project Managers and field teams, this role manages project accounting activities, supports timely billing and payments, and helps keep project costs and documentation accurate and up to date.

This is an opportunity for someone early in their accounting career to build hands-on experience in construction finance and see how their work contributes to successful projects from start to finish.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Set up new projects in the accounting system, including job cost structures and project files.
  • Enter subcontracts and purchase orders, and process related invoices.
  • Process and track change orders, keeping accounting records accurate and current.
  • Collect and review subcontractor and supplier documentation to verify compliance with payment requirements.
  • Prepare and distribute lien waivers for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and field teams to resolve outstanding items and support accurate cost tracking.
  • Process and distribute subcontractor and vendor payments, including electronic payments and paper checks, in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain complete, organized project accounting records and files.
  • Maintain reports tracking outstanding contracts, change orders, and compliance documentation.
  • Prepare and post monthly owner billings in coordination with Project Managers.
  • Complete accounting activities accurately and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Assist with additional accounting and administrative responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field preferred.

  • At least one year of accounting or related experience required; 2+ years preferred.

  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial processes.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and vendors.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat; experience with construction accounting systems is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
