Position Summary

Position Summary

Performs laboratory test to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of polymeric filter materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities/Duties:

* Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.
* Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used.
* Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas for use in processing materials, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.
* Adds chemicals or raw materials to product batches as directed by senior chemist to correct or establish formulation required to meet specification.
* Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for tests, research, or process control. Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment.
* Mixes experimental batches according to procedure and recipes provided.
* Tests and analyzes products to determine strength, stability, purity, and other characteristics.
* Prepares test samples for evaluation.
* Sets up, adjust, and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, air permeability testers, tensile strengths, chemical balance scales, spectrophotometer, and other equipment.
* Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

Associate's degree from a two-year college or technical school; Chemical Technician training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Familiarity with PC application software used for data manipulation and calculation.
Basic understanding of lab equipment and measuring equipment.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

Mathematical skills
Ability to calculate and figure amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to use common sense understanding to carry our instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit while working with materials and lab equipment. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
