Starting Hourly Rate: $13

Hours Per Week: 10-20

A joint endeavor with the Milwaukee Fire Department and Milwaukee Public Schools Division of Recreation and Community Services, The Survive Alive House is designed to teach 2nd thru 5th grade students fire safety and prevention techniques. We are seeking a responsible and dependable individual to assist with the operations of the Survive Alive House.

Position Summary

  • Communicate with schools to schedule tours.
  • Handle inquiries from members of the general public.
  • Coordinate bus transportation and confirm transportation billing.
  • Prepare and distribute fire safety training materials.
  • Process incoming/outgoing mail/email.
  • Perform clerical duties such as payroll, staff employment forms, daily attendance records, staff schedules and standard recreation forms.
  • Provide excellent and professional customer service to internal and external stakeholders at all times.
  • Answer phones, greet visitors, respond to inquiries.
  • Assist with the set up of equipment, operation of controls and daily tours.
  • Instruct and assist children/teachers and other visitors to the Survive Alive House.
  • Order necessary supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

  • Works under the direction of the Milwaukee Fire Department Deputy Chief or his/her designee and the Director of Community Recreation or his/her designee.
Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
  • Access to reliable transportation
Preferred Experience

  • One (1) year experience working with children
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Fast learner.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Interpersonal/Communication skills (particularly with children).
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to forty (40) lbs. on a regular basis.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, smoke from the simulator, darkness and loud noises. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and assist teacher escorts in accommodating children with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
