Position description

In general, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience with the specialized methods as a Junior Specialist.

The CLEAR Center is looking to hire 1 Jr. Specialists.

This position provides technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to Dr. Frank Mitloehner's CLEAR Center in the Department of Animal Science, which focuses on environmental Sustainability in animal agriculture. The research is designed to quantify and mitigate air- and climate pollutants from cattle, swine and poultry production. The research contributes to the generation of fundamental knowledge about emissions from livestock and poultry and ways to reduce these impacts.

Major Responsibilities:

I. RESEARCH (70%)

Coordinate, help conduct trials at the UC Davis Animal Science Research and Teaching Facilities including but not limited to the feedlot, dairy, and swine facility as well as on-farm research and commercial livestock operations. This position is expected to focus on dairy work. Developing protocols and standard operating procedures for animal feeding trials as well as scheduling and training of student interns. Assist in field and laboratory data collections, sample preparation and shipping, upkeep of lab equipment and storage. Expected to attend and participate in lab meetings, give updates on study progress, summarize and interpret data to graduate students, sponsors, and the PI (Dr. Frank Mitloehner).

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15%)

Participate in societies and groups of interest within the Department of Animal Science and National- or State Organizations. Help organize the contributions to journal manuscripts and publications prior to submission, conduct literature searches for articles relevant to the research topics, and engage in discussions of data with the PI.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICES (15%)

Participate in training activities with the lab as well as to help train and assist undergraduate interns. May be asked to complete outside documentation or project management that are beneficial to the lab or their own personal and professional development. May be required to attend relevant conferences or events, present on behalf of the CLEAR Center or participate in social media/outreach content creation.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Upon Start of Work, Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Animal Biology, Animal Science and Management, Agricultural and Environmental Technology, Environmental Science and Management, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, or related field

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Experience working with animals such as cattle

Demonstrated experience multitasking and the ability to switch between projects.

Willingness and interest to learn new techniques.

Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office products and statistical software.

Demonstrated organizational skills such as maintaining records, keeping supplies in stock, updating inventories, and maintaining safety records and training.

The ability to work with a diverse team from different backgrounds and with varying skill levels for the purpose of assisting/training laboratory members and student interns in safety and research protocols.

Ability to conduct library and database searches

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Written and oral communications skills

Familiarity with farm equipment such as tractors and bobcats

Proficiency with techniques on live animal trials

Leadership experience, including leading teams

Experience handling large data sets
