Job Summary
A Sports Medicine Physician is responsible for providing medical care to patients engaging in sports or physical activities, focusing on injury prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as the enhancement of athletic performance. Their duties include diagnosing musculoskeletal and other sports-related injuries and conditions, developing therapy plans, and providing injury prevention education and nutritional advice for an active lifestyle. They will demonstrate a deep understanding of the physiological and psychological demands of competitive sports. The SM Physician will frequently work and collaborate with local athletic trainers and medical staff to manage health issues and sports related injuries related to athletic participation. The SM Physician will also work with Orthopedic Surgeon colleagues in clinic to determine if the patient may require orthopedic surgical evaluation and help facilitate transition of care whenever appropriate. The SM Physician will provide excellent and effective interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, clinic staff, referring physicians, and other healthcare professionals to maintain a strong continuum of care for all patients. The SM Physician will maintain exemplary bedside manner during patient care. The SM Physician will also be expected to attend various high school sporting events, pre-participation sports physical events, and HonorHealth sponsored community sporting events throughout the year to help support and foster the development of the Sports Medicine department.
Essential Functions
- Clinical Care--
During their workday, a Sports Medicine Physician is required to carry out a variety of duties and responsibilities. These may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducting medical evaluations for athletes, including pre-participation physicals, routine check-ups, and assessments. Providing comprehensive diagnosis, treatment of injuries and illnesses common among athletes, ranging from concussions and musculoskeletal injuries to cardiovascular and respiratory conditions for recreational, amateur, and professional athletes. Managing both acute and chronic medical conditions affecting performance. Ordering laboratory and imaging tests and analyzing results to make a diagnosis Performing office-based procedures such as injection or diagnostic ultrasound Collaborating with and referring to physical therapists, sports psychologists, and other specialists to design and supervise rehabilitation programs tailored to athletes' specific needs, ensuring a safe and effective return to sport. Monitoring the health and progress of athletes, and making return-to-play decisions for injured athletes Providing guidance on nutrition, hydration, and supplements, and offer strategies for optimizing rest and recovery to enhance athletic performance in collaboration with a nutritionist or dietician. Advising athletes and coaches on injury prevention and health maintenance, including the management of lifestyle factors that affect long-term health and performance. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals such as orthopedists, and cardiologists.
- Leadership & Compliance--Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the community based primary care, HonorHealth primary care, Orthopedic surgery, and any referring physicians as well as with HonorHealth Urgent Care department, Emergency department, Outpatient Therapy Services, radiology, and other appropriate service areas. Participates in the recruitment and retention of HHMG physicians. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians or other healthcare professionals. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in Sports Medicine Committee meetings and Orthopedic service line Committee meetings as appropriate. Collaborates with the Service Line Administrator to provide fiscal accountability for the service line. Collaborates with Clinical Documentation Specialists. Utilizes Medical Director, when necessary, in difficult situations.
- Team Physician Medical Coverage & Education-Attends various high school sporting events, pre-participation sports physical events, and HonorHealth sponsored community sporting events. Plans, coordinates, facilitates, and participates in educational programs related to services provided by the orthopedic service line. Collaborates with the Vice President for Research and Service Line Administrators to identify research opportunities associated with Orthopedics. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows. Participates in the education of staff and other ancillary professionals. Educating athletes and coaches about nutrition, hydration, exercise regimens, and injury prevention
Education
- Residency - completion of Family Medicine, PM&R, Emergency Medicine, or Internal Medicine residency in an ACGME approved program - Required
- Fellowship Training OR years Clinical Experience - Completion of a Sports Medicine fellowship in an ACGME approved program or 10 years of clinical experience in Sports Medicine if not fellowship trained - Required
- M.D. or D.O Completion of Medical degree - Required
Experience
- Clinical experience in sports medicine or working with athletes. -
- 2 years Experience working full time as a Sports Medicine physician with those experiences in direct patient care in an ambulatory clinic. - Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) BLS (for medical team coverage events) - Required
- Physician\DO - Physician (DO) - State Licensure Current BC/BE in Sports Medicine - Preferred
- Valid AZ state medical license as MD or DO - Required
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Licensure Valid DEA certificate - Required
