The Controls Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing new or improved production processes to support efficient and cost-effective manufacturing. This role has a strong focus on PLC automation, electrical systems, and equipment upgrades, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and compliance across all production operations. You will be based onsite at our Automotive OEM coatings plant in Adrian, MI and report to the Maintenance Manager. Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement production processes, including sequencing of operations and fabrication procedures for tools and equipment. Troubleshoot and maintain PLC systems, with a focus on Allen-Bradley platforms and Rockwell Automation software. Lead and support automation initiatives, including programming for new equipment and system upgrades. Provide electrical oversight during equipment installations, ensuring systems are properly integrated and meet operational requirements. Create, update, and maintain electrical schematics and drawings using AutoCAD, including developing prints for new installations and upgrading existing documentation. Conduct testing throughout all stages of production to ensure process control, quality, and operational efficiency. Troubleshoot production and equipment issues, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. Ensure all production processes and systems comply with applicable safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Support continuous improvement efforts focused on automation, efficiency, and cost reduction. Provide informal technical guidance and support to less experienced team members.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute. 5+ years of experience in a related field. Strong electrical background, including troubleshooting and system integration. Prior experience working with PLC programming, specifically Allen-Bradley systems and Rockwell software is preferred. Proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical schematics and print development. Demonstrated strength in fostering clear, collaborative communication at every organizational level. Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies; Prior experience in automotive or chemical manufacturing would be advantageous.
