Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Fire and Emergency Services is responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of fire and safety hazards at Drexel University. It is their job to work with Drexel departments to minimize fire and safety risks and to manage compliance with applicable University policies and fire code requirements. In the absence of the Director for Fire and Emergency Services, the Assistant Director may act as interim Director.

Essential Functions



  • Without direct supervision, manage comprehensive safety and fire code audits of university departments and buildings. Be able to recognize deficiencies and hazards independently; be able to research findings to determine extent of possible hazards.
  • Work with external departments to correct fire safety hazards and develop preventive procedures.
  • Conduct training classes and materials and deliver training courses that have already been developed.
  • Act as an Office of Fire and Emergency Services representative to other departments, acting as a technical advisor on fire safety issues.
  • Write reports documenting observations, and recommendations for Director's review. Assist with writing reports to other departments.
  • Document all work in Office of Fire and Emergency Services computer files and databases.
  • Serve as a member of Drexel Emergency Response Team (DERT).
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 7-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment, and serve on response team.
  • Be available for after-hours response.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Safety, Environmental, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 years as a Fire and Emergency Services Specialist with Drexel, or equivalent work experience in a code enforcement, fire service, or university setting.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national fire codes and regulations pertaining to fire safety and fire code compliance.
  • Knowledge of organizational and personnel management skills.
  • Creative problem solving to recognize and analyze needs and assist in the development of programs to address needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a team setting.
  • Ability to use computer database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Basic knowledge of fire code enforcement principles.
  • Ability to locate and use appropriate technical resources in fire safety.
  • Proficient in professional presentation skills.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade K. Compensation for this grade ranges from $54,630.00 to $81,940.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position will vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
