Job Summary

Temporary Employment Services places experienced Medical Assistants in UC Davis and UC Davis Health departments who have an expressed need for temporary coverage. Medical Assistants provide non-licensed medical support to medical care providers in an outpatient setting. Incumbents room patents; set up equipment and instruments; independently perform, and/or assist providers with performing, exams and procedures, including administering injections; with proper provider authorization, provide instructions, training and advice to patients; call in prescriptions; clean and calibrate equipment; clean and stock exam rooms; and provide proper documentation in patient chart. Incumbents may also provide front office services on a routine or back-up basis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have Certificate of Completion from a Medical Assistant training program.
  • Two (2) years of recent Medical Assistant experience in Outpatient/Ambulatory setting OR at least three (3) years as MA I in outpatient/ambulatory setting.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Ability to utilize relevant medical terminology and effectively communicate with providers and patients

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oncology experience
  • EPIC/EMR experience
  • Experience in customer service and answering telephone calls.
  • Knowledge and experience with computer programs, including: Excel, Word, Outlook

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

Provide non-licensed clinical support as a medical assistant to the medical care provider(s) within the department/clinic assigned and per operational need.

Rooming patients: call patient from waiting area using appropriate identifiers, keep patients appraised of wait times.

Obtain and record height, weight, blood pressure, vital signs, reason for visit (chief complaint), history, verification of medication allergies, pain screening, and other information as directed.

Handle and steward medications as directed, following University policies and procedures, pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines relating to medical assistants.

Prepare and position patient for exam and/or procedure, set up equipment and instruments, maintaining sterile technique as required and independently perform or assist provider with performing exams and procedures.

Administer medications as directed, following University policies and procedures, pertinent laws, regulations and guidelines relating to medical assistants.

Collect, prepare and process specimens per departmental guidelines, including recording appropriate information or results in patient medical record.

Provide patient transport/escort as needed, following safe patient transport guidelines.

Follow emergency procedures, including CPR, and/or notify provider of baseline changes, as dictated by practice protocol.

Maintain confidentiality is all aspects of patient care.

Documentation and Record Keeping

Maintain up to date information in patient medical record (paper record and/or electronic record)including coordination of prior medical records and outside records received.

Provide accurate documentation as designated per departmental guidelines, prior to, during and after medical appointments.

Appropriately indicate supplies used or procedures performed for patient visits in coordination with information supplied by the provider.

May pull and file paper charts as needed for visit coordination.

Provide telephone call coordination, incoming and outgoing calls for; appointment appropriateness, additional information, coordinating messages to/from provider, and providing test results or information to patients as instructed/authorized by provider.

As authorized by provider, provide instruction and training for patients regarding preparation for procedures and tests, exercises, and other self-care activities.

Department/Clinic Coordination

Maintain exam rooms, consistently clean and stock necessary supplies.

Assist with maintaining inventory of medical supplies, including recording and requesting supplies per departmental guidelines.

Maintain narcotic logs and protocols if present in department/clinic.

Monitor and dispose of expired drugs following University and departmental policies and procedures.

Clean and calibrate medical equipment and machines per protocol.

Wrap and autoclave/sterilize instruments and equipment used for exams, procedures, and surgeries.

Assist with orientation of new staff and/or medical assistant externs providing information that includes, but not limited to, departmental protocols, workflow, policies & procedures, equipment, supplies, organization, etc.

Work Environment

Must be willing to work variable days (including weekends), hours and locations as required to meet business needs of the practice. Ability to lift, move, and/or position patients as necessary to room them and prepare them for exams and procedures. May be required to have the ability to retrieve and file bulky medical record charts (up to 3" thick) stored in filing cabinets and on shelves that may be above shoulder level and below waist level, and to efficiently transport multiple charts weighing 5 to 25 pounds throughout the medical office. References reflect an overall meet or exceeds.
