HJF is seeking a Video Journalist who conceives and produces original video stories on deadline for social media channels and websites.

This position will be in support of the Office of the Vice President of External Affairs (VPE) in Bethesda, MD.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike.Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Working closely with the External Affairs team to reach new audiences, conceives, develops, and plans video segments. Includes setting up interviews, determining where segments will be shot, or selecting the different shots to be used.
  • Compiles data from various sources, investigates, analyzes, and writes the script/storyboard, editing as needed and deciding what slant a story will take.
  • Operates the camera equipment, either holding the camera or placing the camera on a tripod to prevent it from moving. Conducts interviews or works in conjunction with another communications team member who interviews the subject.
  • Transforms raw video clips and footage into high-quality finished videos used to inform, engage, and inspire audiences. Use specialized software applications and editing tools to merge content from multiple sources and add pictures, graphics, visual effects, voice, sound effects, and music as needed. All products are delivered on time. Work will range from day assignments to long-term projects.
  • Performs work involved in the communication of information that includes scientific, medical, technical, military, and administrative subject matter in education, research, training, and general information environments.
  • Serves as a manager of the University's YouTube channel to ensure products are uploaded onto appropriate playlists, old or non-performing content is archived accordingly, and assists with setting up USU livestream-to-YouTube events.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance at and participation in required training for the role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts (film production), Journalism, Digital Media, Communication, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Has an extensive background in journalism, video production and equipment, video editing and online media.
  • Has the technical skills, ability and expertise to create a whole video story from beginning to end.
  • Has wide knowledge of video journalism and the passion to work with partners to find original, engaging content to drive page views and increase social media footprint using text, video and multimedia content.
  • Is an energetic self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Video portfolio with a minimum of 3-5 samples available.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting but will require occasional event attendance.
  • This is a hybrid position requiring at least 2 days onsite.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $67,500-$91,100. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
