JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State Abington seeks to hire part-time Youth Program Instructors to work with students ages 12-17 from June 22 to July 6, 2026. We are seeking a tech-savvy and creative individual to join our summer camp team as a Technology & Makerspace Instructor. This role is ideal for someone passionate about innovation, hands-on learning, and introducing students to emerging technologies such as 3D printing and digital design.

Job Duties
  • Facilitate engaging, hands-on learning experiences in a makerspace environment for campers of varying skill levels.

  • Introduce and support students in the use of 3D printing technologies, including setup, troubleshooting, and production.

  • Guide campers in using design software, including beginner-friendly platforms and more advanced tools such as Tinkercad, to create original projects.

  • Assist with the setup and use of 3D printing applications and tools (e.g., Bambu Studio or similar slicing/printing software).

  • Encourage creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration through project-based learning.

  • Maintain organization and safety standards within the makerspace.

  • Provide individualized support and adapt instruction based on student experience levels.

  • Instructors are responsible for assisting with creating and implementing program curriculum and lessons, managing supplies, and the supervision of minors participating in programs.

  • Instructors must work collaboratively with the Youth Program Director, Student counselors, and Continuing Education staff to create an inviting, enjoyable and educational environment for students.

  • Attend team meetings as expected by Youth Program Director.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Experience working in a makerspace, STEM program, or similar educational environment.

  • Familiarity with 3D printing hardware and software, including slicing tools (e.g., Bambu Studio or comparable platforms).

  • Experience with 3D design tools, particularly Tinkercad; experience with more advanced CAD programs is a plus.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and comfort working with technology.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills are required.

  • Must be outgoing, work well with children, have strong customer service skills, and be a self-starter.

  • For most openings, an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline, from an accredited institution, is required.

  • Prior teaching experience is strongly preferred.

  • Summer instructors are needed for daytime in-person programming from Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, are required to attend a one-day, in-person staff orientation at Penn State Abington, scheduled between June 15th and June 18th, prior to the start of the camp sessions. Should there be any conflicts during this time frame, we can address them further during the interview.

  • Instructors will be required to attend a mandatory staff orientation prior to the camp season.

Preferred Candidate Profile:
  • The ideal candidate is innovative, patient, and enthusiastic about teaching technology to youth. They should be comfortable guiding beginners while also supporting more advanced learners in developing their own designs and projects.

Scope of youth programs are dependent on course content and vary in length. Multiple vacancies are available for various programs. Employment is also contingent upon adequate student enrollment in the Youth Programs.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check, and the National Sex Offender Registry Clearance (NSOR).Additional clearances may be necessary if you resided outside of Pennsylvania in the past five years.
