Production Scientist 2

Promega Corporation
United States, Wisconsin, Madison
May 16, 2026
Job Description

OUR TEAM: The Molecular, Cell Biology & Reporters (MCBR) team manufactures luminescent substrates, buffers, and standards that power some of Promega's most important product lines - used by industrial, academic, and pharmaceutical laboratories around the world. We're a team of scientists who take quality seriously, enjoy solving complex problems collaboratively, and bring curiosity to both the bench and the broader work of improving how we operate.

We're also a team that's actively evolving. We integrate AI tools into daily workflows, build shared knowledge systems, and approach manufacturing science as something worth continuously improving - not just repeating. If that kind of environment energizes you, you'll fit in well here.

YOUR ROLE: As a Production Scientist, you'll manufacture a range of buffers, substrates, and standards - from bench-scale batches to large-scale production runs - and perform QC assays that confirm products meet quality and functionality requirements before they reach customers.

That's the foundation. But this team doesn't draw a hard line between bench work and thinking work. You'll troubleshoot product investigations, contribute to process improvement projects, support new product development teams, and write and revise the protocols and documentation the team depends on. At the PS2 level, roughly 60-70% of your time is hands-on manufacturing; the rest is the analytical, documentation, and project work that keeps the operation sharp.

You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to team-level knowledge-building efforts - databases, workflows, and tools that make the whole team more effective over time. This is work that compounds, and you'll be part of building it.

CORE DUTIES:

1. Independently manufacture buffers, substrates, and standards to specification across a range of scales, with attention to schedule and on-time delivery.

2. Perform QC assays confirming appearance, activity, and functionality; evaluate raw materials as needed.

3. Adapt to changing production priorities without sacrificing quality or accuracy.

4. Conduct technical assessments of out-of-spec products and make recommendations for resolution.

5. Design and execute experiments to diagnose manufacturing or QC issues and improve existing protocols.

6. Use available scientific and technical resources - including AI tools - to accelerate problem-solving.

7. Maintain strong documentation practices across batch records, protocols, and quality documents.

8. Write, review, and revise manufacturing protocols, material specifications, and QC methods.

9. Demonstrate understanding of quality requirements relevant to business and regulatory standards.

10. Support product improvement and new product development teams, providing technical input and execution.

11. Communicate project updates and issues to your supervisor; collaborate with Marketing, QA, and R&D as needed.

12. Contribute to team knowledge-building projects that improve how MCBR operates over time.

13. Use AI tools as part of daily workflows - documentation, data analysis, protocol development, and more.

14. You don't need to arrive as an AI expert, but you do need to arrive curious. The team learns by doing, and so will you.

15. Demonstrates inclusion through their own words and actions and is accountable for a safe workspace. Acts with kindness, curiosity and respect for others.

16. Embracing and being open to incorporating Promega's 6 Emotional & Social Intelligence (ESI) core principles in daily work.

17. Understands and complies with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A.D., B.S., or M.S. in a scientific discipline (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology, or related).

2. Hands-on laboratory experience including small-volume pipetting, quality control analysis, and manufacturing at bench or larger scale.

3. Proven technical troubleshooting skills and a documented record of success in core laboratory duties.

4. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills - able to manage multiple products and priorities simultaneously.

5. Excellent written and verbal communication: you interpret and convey scientific results clearly and work productively across functions.

6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively; able to resolve interpersonal challenges constructively.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Demonstrated experience in large-scale manufacturing.

2. Experience with cell culture techniques beyond coursework

3. Familiarity with ISO, GDP, and/or cGMP environments

4. Prior industry experience

5. Experience with equipment or software for data collection and experimental analysis

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to work at a laboratory bench for extended periods.

2. Ability to work safely with hazardous materials (chemicals, electrical equipment)

3. Ability to lift 30 lbs. occasionally.

4. Ability to use standard laboratory protective equipment and read SDS.

5. Ability to use computers interactively for extended periods.
