Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Academic Advising, the Assistant Director of New Student Advising leads the LAS programming efforts related to the onboarding, advising, and registration of over 2,000 first-year students and over 700 transfer/ readmit students each fall term, and over 300 transfer/ readmit students each spring term. With the support of the Academic Advisor, Advising Operations and focusing on ensuring the successful delivery of student-centered programming, the Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of New Student Advising and Registration. In collaboration with the Academic Advisor, Advising Operations, the Assistant Director hires, trains, and supervises student employees who support LAS New Student Advising and Registration and directly supervises LAS Academic Advising Center's Academic Advisors.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides collaborative leadership within Student Academic Affairs and degree advising administration. Co-facilitates the Advising Center's advisor meetings.
  • Provides direct supervision of Academic Advisors in the LAS Academic Advising Center including New Student Advising and Registration programming. Conducts employee performance reviews and identifies professional development opportunities for staff. In collaboration with the Academic Advisor of Advising Operations, hires, trains, and supervises student employees who support LAS New Student Advising and Registration.
  • Serves on the search committees for academic advisors. Assists with the onboarding and participates in the training and continued professional development of academic advisors
  • Serves as chair of LAS Student Academic Affairs' New Student Advising and Registration committee, which: accesses outcomes, solicits feedback from staff, and incorporates feedback into future new student advising programs.
  • Develops and revises related new student advising materials, the New Student Academic Guide, web materials, and outreach communication.
  • Develops and presents staff training in preparation for new student advising.
  • Other related duties include participating in and/or leading special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Education Administration, Counseling, Liberal Arts and Sciences, or a related field.
    • Demonstrated experience in academic advising in an institution of higher education/learning.
    • Prior experience with advising and administration in student enrollment life cycle, course articulation, degree planning, FERPA, student development theory, and support of diverse student populations.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and PC/computer literacy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other related software/databases.
