Requisition Id16454 Overview: We are seeking a Waste Services Representative (WSR) who will provide technically defensible waste characterization documentation to support the safe and compliant disposition of wastes generated at ORNL. This position resides in the Customer Interface Section, Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD), Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) Directorate atOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assesses waste management practices to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and internal policies.
- Implement processes to improve waste characterization, storage, and disposal.
- Develops more complex solutions to address waste management challenges and integrates best practices into daily operations.
- Directs individuals to adhere to established waste management protocols and fosters a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
- Assesses waste management systems to ensure alignment with regulatory standards and organizational goals.
- Implements processes to regulate the accumulation, segregation, and disposal of waste.
- Develop more complex strategies for hazardous and non-hazardous waste minimization and recycling.
- Ensures accurate waste documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Reviews new waste management regulations and integrates them into operational procedures.
- Confer with internal and external stakeholders to address concerns and improve waste management practices.
- Helps establish and implement training programs for staff on waste management protocols.
- Coaches team members/customers on best practices for waste management and compliance adherence.
- Directs individuals to maintain a safe and compliant environment through ongoing guidance and support.
- Work with generators to develop technically sound waste characterization documentation (radiological, chemical, physical, and biological) to ensure full compliance with applicable regulations and ORNL waste management procedures.
- Provide expert-level regulatory and technical guidance to waste generators on selecting compliant, acceptable packaging consistent with applicable standards (e.g., DOT) and the waste acceptance criteria of the intended disposal facility.
- Provide strategic, expert-level guidance to waste generators to ensure regulatory compliance and to optimize cost-effective disposition pathways for routine and non-routine waste streams.
- Employees hired for this position may be required to serve as a member of the ORNL HazMat and Spill Response Team, consistent with the employee's experience, qualifications, and training. This collateral duty requires the willingness to be available during off-duty hours to respond to an emergency.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in science, engineering, or health and safety related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in waste management, environmental management, construction or other related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Waste management / characterization experience within the Department of Energy complex.
- ORNL experience, including operational experience about typical ORNL waste streams and associated waste management challenges is strongly desired.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
