Position Purpose
The Junior Data Engineer plays a critical role within Dartmouth College Athletics and Recreation, supporting the department's vision to be a leader in sports analytics within the Ivy League and at the collegiate athletics. This is a newly created position that sits within the Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) team - an interdisciplinary group dedicated to helping varsity student-athletes maximize their potential academically, athletically, and in their lives after Dartmouth. The Junior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and managing a modern data ecosystem that elevates the health, performance, and competitive success of Dartmouth's varsity athletics programs. This role enables data-informed decisions across a diverse group of stakeholders through data infrastructure, cloud-based solutions, and accessible analytics.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, data engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in data engineering or a closely related role.
  • Demonstrated experience designing data pipelines and integrations.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data environments and modern data architectures.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R.
  • Experience with database management, ELT/ETL frameworks, and API-based integrations.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Snowflake, or other cloud data platforms.
  • Strong ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree engineering, data science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in/passion for sports analytics and working within collegiate athletics.

Dartmouth Peak Performance Integrated Support Team

  • Design, build, and maintain the technical foundation of the DP2 data ecosystem.
  • Lead the documentation, deployment, and maintenance or production data systems and internal tools.
  • Ensure optimal database performance, including efficient data storage, retrieval, and communication for all users.
  • Develop and manage scalable, cloud-based data pipelines, models, and architectures to support analytics and reporting.
  • Import and integrate data from diverse internal and external sources using ETL/ELT frameworks and API-driven integrations.
  • Leverage cloud platforms (AWS, Snowflake) to improve data accessibility, scalability, storage efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
  • Translate stakeholder and other business requirements into technical specifications for data systems, pipelines, and integrations.
  • Adhere to data governance, security, and compliance requirements.

Varsity Sports Analytics

  • Deliver ad hoc and automated reporting to inform decision-making related to athlete health and performance.
  • Collaborate with coaches and sports performance staff to ensure data is accessible, interpretable, and relevant to their needs.
  • Support broader analytics initiatives within the Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) team and Dartmouth Athletics and Recreation.
