About the Department
The Department of Integrative Humanities and Social Sciences houses six majors with over 500 students in Africana Studies, Arts Studies, International Studies, Self-Design, Science, Technology, and Society, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

IHSS also offers 7 undergraduate minors, 3 undergraduate dual-degree honors programs, and 1 graduate program. IHSS has core faculty and faculty directors who work in partnership with departments from our college and others to deliver the courses in each program.

IHSS actively partners with departments and programs on campus and in the Triangle to host events including speakers and conferences in support of the programs several times during the school year.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Integrative Humanities and Social Sciences ( IHSS) at NC State University invites applications for a full-time Academic Advisor who is passionate about student success, mentorship, and education. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with a varied student population, helping students navigate their academic journey while fostering meaningful engagement within the university community.
The Academic Advisor will primarily support first- and second-year students, as well as new transfer students, enrolled in IHSS majors. The successful candidate will play a key role in guiding students through academic planning, campus engagement, and successful transitions into university life.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Advising & Student Success (90%)

  • Provide individualized academic advising and enrollment support for students pursuing interdisciplinary majors, including Africana Studies (AFS), Arts Studies (ARS), International Studies (IS), Self-Design (SD), Science, Technology, and Society (STS), and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality (WGS) Studies.
  • Empower students to define and achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals.
  • Help students explore and develop their academic interests and focus areas within their chosen major.
  • Guide students through curriculum planning, university policies, degree requirements, and academic decision-making.
  • Connect students with campus resources and opportunities that enhance their educational experience, including minors, certificates, undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, and experiential learning.
  • Support student onboarding and transition initiatives, including orientation programs, first-year experiences, transfer student integration, Summer Start, and Spring Connect programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support student retention, engagement, and success initiatives.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of departmental events such as commencement ceremonies, orientation sessions, and other student-centered programming.
  • Maintain accurate advising records and documentation in accordance with university standards and best practices.
  • Stay informed about university resources, course offerings, and student support services across campus.


Outreach & Collaboration (10%)

  • Partner with university offices and community colleges to support smooth internal and external transfer pathways for students.
  • Contribute to departmental recruitment and outreach efforts as needed.
  • Participate in occasional evening and weekend events that support student engagement and recruitment initiatives.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in humanities, social sciences, higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or a closely related higher education role (graduate assistantships or internships may be considered).

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills, with the ability to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Ability to interpret academic policies, analyze student records, and provide clear guidance.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Student-centered approach grounded in developmental and holistic advising philosophies.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative advising team.
  • Problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment in handling sensitive student issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in humanities, social sciences, higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience advising or supporting students in interdisciplinary, humanities, or social science programs.
  • Familiarity with academic advising technologies and student information systems (e.g., degree audit tools, appointment platforms, EAB Navigate360).
  • Experience working with first-generation, transfer, international, or other historically under served student populations.
  • Evidence of collaborative work with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support student success.
