Scope of work:
The Wound Care Educator (RN) is responsible for advancing evidence-based skin integrity, wound, and ostomy care practices across the organization. This role provides education, clinical consultation, and quality improvement support to nursing staff and interprofessional partners, with a strong focus on prevention and management of hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs).
The Wound Care Educator functions in an educational and consultative capacity. The role partners closely with nursing leadership, unit-based Skin Champions, and quality teams to support standardization of practice, documentation accuracy, and improved patient outcomes.
  • Designs, delivers, and evaluates wound and ostomy care education for nursing staff, including orientation, annual competencies, and targeted unit-based education.
    Develops and delivers education on pressure injury prevention, staging, documentation standards, and differentiation of wound etiologies (e.g., moisture-associated skin damage vs. pressure injury).
    Provides just-in-time, bedside education to support safe and effective wound and ostomy care practices across all shifts.
    Supports development, onboarding, and ongoing mentoring of unit-based Skin Champions to extend wound care expertise throughout the organization.

  • Serves as a clinical resource and consultant for complex, non-healing, or high-risk wounds in collaboration with bedside nurses and providers.
    Participates in proactive skin rounds and patient assessments to reinforce prevention strategies and evidence-based practice.
    Provides consultation and education support to off-shift and weekend staff as scheduled

  • Monitors wound-related quality indicators, including HAPI trends, and collaborates with nursing leadership on improvement strategies.
    Participates in pressure injury prevalence studies and supports follow-up education and action planning as applicable.
    Conducts and supports audits of wound-related documentation (LDAs) to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
    Aligns education efforts with audit findings, quality data, and organizational priorities
  • Develops and maintains standardized wound and ostomy reference tools, including quick-reference guides and documentation tip sheets.
    Assists in reviewing and updating wound care policies, procedures, and documentation standards to align with evidence-based guidelines.
    Collaborates with leadership and value analysis to evaluate wound care products, equipment, and support surfaces.
    Contributes to the development of short- and long-term education roadmaps to support sustained improvement in wound care outcomes.
Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree
  • 2 years of relevant experience Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) -State of Michigan Upon Hire required And
  • Wound Care, Certified (WCC) - NAWCO National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy Upon Hire required
