Position Summary

The Estimator supports the bidding process by development and preparation of cost estimates for projects or services as assigned. This role follows the established standardized procedures, methods, and processes for estimating. Supports various capture teams composed of Forgen employees from across the company. The Estimator coordinates overall estimates and proposals in conjunction with the assigned capture-teams and present periodic and final submittals to Regional Managers and other corporate representatives as required for review and input.

  • Work with an assigned capture team to identify and develop solutions and estimate the resources required for both simple and complex projects.
  • Prepare detailed and organized cost estimates and assist with other submittal documents (including schedules, diagrams, work plans, figures, etc.) for proposals that require additional information as part of the bidding process.
  • Assess and communicate project risks based on a thorough knowledge of the proposal documents.
  • Coordinate the preparation of quantity takeoffs from project plans and documents.
  • Review drawings and specifications with capture team and identify areas of concern that may require additional clarification prior to the bid date.
  • Help identify ideas that will create competitive advantages over the other bidders and present to capture team.
  • Coordinate with the capture team to obtain multiple competitive quotes for materials and subcontracted services.
  • Prepare proposal schedules utilizing critical-path scheduling software.
  • Help to maintain updated database of cost information (historical cost analysis of labor and equipment rates).
  • Attend pre-bid walks (preconstruction meetings) as needed and utilize comprehensive industry experience to determine the technical needs of the project based upon site restrictions.
  • Assemble bid-files (including all development information) that were utilized in preparation of the estimates.
  • Create professional relationships and uphold our reputation with clients and partners by interfacing effectively with owner/client, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Consistently demonstrate precision and accuracy in calculations and documentation with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Meet deadlines and put in the time needed to complete bids, estimates and related tasks.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed.


Basic Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of estimating experience in heavy-civil, geotechnical, foundations, and/or environmental remediation fields.
  • Scheduling software experience (Primavera/MS Project).
  • Estimating software experience (Bid2Win/B2W, HCSS, or similar).
  • Quantity takeoff software experience (Agtek/AutoCAD).
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge and experience with Primavera, Microsoft Project, Office, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and scientific method.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Above average oral and written communication skills, along with use of independent judgement and creativity applied to resolution of issues.
  • Highly proactive and responsive to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and advise project leadership on complex issues.
  • Good problem-solving skills/decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Ability to work with all levels of management.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to drive on behalf of company business.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience estimating on >$500K projects is preferred.


Physical Demands & Work Environment

This office-based role requires frequent computer use and effective communication, with occasional travel to project sites as needed. Site visits may involve extended periods of standing or walking and required PPE, with potential exposure to heavy equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, uneven terrain, and extreme weather.
