SkillBridge Opportunity - Protection & Controls (P&C) Technician

Shermco Industries is seeking transitioning service members to join our SkillBridge Protection & Controls (P&C) Technician program-a hands-on training opportunity designed to bridge military experience into a high-demand civilian career in the electrical power industry. Must be active duty with 100-180 days remaining in service when joining Shermco.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities and Expectations:
  • During the SkillBridge program, you'll gain hands-on experience and exposure to the core responsibilities of a Protection & Controls Technician, including
    • Assist with the installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relay systems, communication equipment, and substation controls
    • Support functional testing of protection and control systems across transmission lines, transformers, breakers, feeders, and other high-voltage equipment
    • Gain exposure to relay technologies, including industry-leading platforms such as SEL-411L relay and other SEL and GE relay systems
    • Learn to work with RTUs (Remote Terminal Units) and communication processors used in power system monitoring and control
    • Participate in system upgrades, including RTU and telecom improvements for various clients
    • Develop the ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, including one-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams
    • Assist in identifying discrepancies and supporting troubleshooting efforts in the field
    • Learn how to accurately document and submit test reports for client and regulatory requirements
    • Support field operations, including tracking time, expenses, and maintaining equipment and tools
  • By the end of the program, you'll have foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in Protection & Controls, positioning you for a full-time role in a high-demand technical field.


Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:

We welcome candidates from all branches of service, with preference for those whose military experience translates to electrical systems, controls, or power distribution environments similar to civilian Protection & Controls work.

Strongly aligned military backgrounds include:

Electrical / Power Generation / Distribution
  • Army: 12P (Prime Power), 91D (Power Generation), 25-series (signal with power exposure)
  • Air Force: 3E0X1 (Electrical Systems), 3E0X2 (Power Production)
  • Navy: Electrician's Mate, Electronics Technician
  • Marine Corps: 1141 (Electrician), 1142 (Electrical Equipment Repair)
Electronics / Controls / Communications
  • Army: 94-series (Electronic Maintenance), 25-series (Signal/Comms)
  • Air Force: 2A/3D/1D7 career fields (avionics, cyber transport, RF, systems)
  • Navy: Fire Controlman, Sonar Technician (strong troubleshooting + systems logic)
  • Marine Corps: 28xx (Communications/Electronics)
Mechanical with Electrical Exposure (Secondary Fit)
    • Generator mechanics, heavy equipment, or maintenance roles with electrical troubleshooting
    • Candidates who worked on power systems, controls, or diagnostic equipment.
Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, drive regularly, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Should be able to pass a fit for duty physical exam when required
  • Pass pre-employment drug test, and periodic unannounced drug tests
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check with 7 year history
  • Have a valid drivers license and meet minimum motor vehicle insurability standards
  • Take and pass 30 hour OSHA training
  • Ability to work in a field environment subject to changing outdoor conditions
  • Work overtime as needed and willingness to travel extensively to client work locations
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
