The Department of Language and Literature, housed within the College of Liberal Arts & Education at Saint Xavier University, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track open rank department chair faculty position in English with expertise in writing and rhetoric.
The Department of Language and Literature supports the General Education two course writing requirement, Middle Level and Secondary Education English Language Arts majors, Spanish in the Professions major, Spanish PK-12 Education major, and various minors.
Critical aspects of the position will be to support the development and assessment of highly effective general education writing courses, to develop, review, and assess the English and Spanish teacher preparation majors (middle and secondary English education, and Spanish PK-12 education) in alignment with Illinois State Board of Education requirements in collaboration with the Education Division, and to develop, review, and assess the Spanish in the Professions major. The position has a start date in the Fall of 2026 and entails a ten-month contract which includes nine months during the academic year and one month over the summer. Rank depends on credentials and years of experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Teach 9 credit hours each semester of English courses related to one's area of expertise
- Lead all activities of the Department of Language and Literature
- Manage the curriculum and assessment for the majors, minors, and general education course offerings
- Hire, supervise, evaluate, mentor, and support adjunct and full-time faculty
- Establish a program of research leading to peer-reviewed publications and presentations
- Provide service to the program, college, and university

Qualifications

- Doctorate in English, Composition and Rhetoric, or closely related field
- Excellence in collegiate teaching grounded in evidence-based best practices for teaching and learning, particularly in writing
- Experience with curriculum design and assessment
- Experience with or potential for excellence in leadership
- Evidence of potential for peer-reviewed scholarship
COMPENSATION
Salary and rank will be determined by credentials and experience.
