Qualifications Education and Experience: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Necessary Special Qualifications: Complete a federal background check in accordance with the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) for issuance of an HSPD-12 compliant Personal Identity Verifi-cation (PIV) credential card. Overview This classification learns to perform para-professional disability claims work of average difficulty. An employee in this class learns to be responsible for providing direct assistance to disability claims examiners in the adjudication process for determining eligibility for the Social Security Administration disability program. This classification performs responsibilities at the learning level under direct supervision. This class differs from the DHS Disability Claims Assistant 2 in that the incumbent of the latter functions at the working level. *An applicant appointed to this classification will be reclassified to a(n) DHS Disability Claims Asst 2 after successful completion of a mandatory one-year training period; 'unacceptable' or 'needs improvement' performance ratings during the training period will result in automatic demotion or termination. Responsibilities ALL LISTED RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE PERFORMED AT THE LEARNING LEVEL:
- Receives and processes a significant volume of documentation, primarily by mail, for claimants such as claimant correspondence and medical records from vendors, providers, and outside agencies for use by the claims examiner in the processing of Social Security Disability claims.
- May review claimant forms for completeness, accuracy, and consistency and assist claims examiners with obtaining documentation from providers or claimants. May gather and apply relevant information to ensure clients receive effective services.
- Maintains integrity and security of personal identifiable information, federal computer systems, and confidential documents in accordance with SSA mandates.
- Interacts constantly by phone with claimants, third parties, attorneys, and outside entities for the purpose of furnishing and obtaining information regarding client circumstances.
- Utilizes scripted instructions as directed by federal and state policies to provide information and direction to claimants. Communicates questions through appropriate chain of command to obtain policy or procedural clarification.
- Organizes and enters claimant documentary evidence and records into an electronic case management folder.
- Documents case notes, appointments, and general correspondence for examiner review and adjudication.
- Schedules consultative examination appointments for claimants and provides notification of appointment time and date to claimants, third parties, and attorneys. Reschedules missed consultative examination appointments and documents reasons for missed exams.
