POSITION SCOPE AND ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT

Moss's Associate SME, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), will be responsible for overseeing both internal and external consultant engineering services as it relates to the design, integration, and performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems for our Utility Scale Solar and stand-alone BESS projects. The Associate SME, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), is a subject matter expert role supporting estimating, engineering management, and operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the BESS engineering effort to increase the safety, throughput, quality, and reliability of our energy storage systems in support of our clients and internal business partners.

  • Manage technical QA/QC of conceptual BESS system designs from our engineer of record through our engineering management team.

  • Work with the Engineering management team to develop QA/QC checklists and drawing review processes specific to BESS integration.

  • Review engineering and capital cost estimates for assigned BESS-related projects to support Estimating and Early-Stage teams.

  • Review client BESS scope of work documents and exhibits to determine feasibility and whether the requested work was included in the basis of bid documents.

  • Coordinate and review design documentation provided by the Engineer of Record (EOR) to ensure it is sufficient for construction and meets all contractual obligations.

  • Provide procurement support to ensure Moss provided battery storage equipment (modules, inverters, control systems) is sufficient for construction and meets all contractual obligations.

  • Develop, Own, and Maintain Moss-recommended implementation standards and guidelines for BESS design, safety, and integration for turnkey EPC projects.

  • Advise Moss on BESS safety requirements (NFPA 855, fire suppression) and best practices for system reliability and performance.

  • Develop and manage the implementation of new standards and new technology into Moss's standard best practices.

  • Provide internal BESS-focused training as required.

  • Work with the SME team to develop cross-functional impacts of BESS design, including integration with substation and SCADA systems.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, technical field, or related discipline - required.

  • 3+ years of direct and relevant experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems - required.

  • Thorough knowledge of BESS components, including solar panels, inverters/transformers, racking systems, and battery systems - required.

  • Familiarity with battery control systems, thermal management, and power conversion systems is required.

  • Ability to review electrical systems analysis (e.g., arc flash, short circuit, grounding, and coordination studies) reports as they relate to BESS integration - required.

  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and relevant NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 855) as they relate to battery energy storage and power plants is a plus.

  • Experience in control system documentation using MS Office and AutoCAD - required.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel - required.

  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills for option evaluation and early conflict resolution.

  • Organizes technical data for efficient review of assumptions and decisions.

  • Effective written/verbal communication across disciplines and partners.

  • Manages time to balance tasks and review cycles against RFP/pipeline timelines.

  • Reliable task/project owner; reviews/approves PE outputs with minimal oversight.

  • Demonstrate an execution mindset; proactively identify opportunities to improve workflows and deliverables.

  • Anticipates constructability issues; provides input to prevent downstream risks.

  • Critical thinking skills are needed to escalate when the scope, schedule, or cost is impacted.

  • Strong attention to detail with forward-looking solutions for clean handoffs.

  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines to align electrical with civil/mechanical constraints.

  • Comfortable traveling across the country to perform site visits and provide technical support to construction teams. (Travel: between 20-25%)
