Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix is seeking an outstanding academic leader to serve as the chair for the Department of Pathology. This leadership position will be responsible for strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the education and other programmatic missions of the department

This chair reports directly to the dean of the College of Medicine - Phoenix. Important collaborative relationships include other chairs at the College of Medicine - Phoenix and partnerships with faculty at other leading medical centers in Phoenix, such as Phoenix Children's, Phoenix VA Health Care System, Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner and others.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in the Department of Pathology, actively participate in teaching, research and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of full professor.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Development and execution on a departmental vision that leverages the unique strengths of the U of A.
  • Foster, support and further develop excellence in medical education for medical students.
  • Provide strategic and administrative leadership.
  • Execute on faculty and staff recruitment, mentoring, development and retention, as needed.
  • Build educational and training programs.
  • Foster collaborations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Track record of national distinction in teaching, clinical care and scholarship in an academic department or comparable environment.
  • Track record of national distinction in service as seen by participation on national committees in American Society for
  • Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or similar professional societies.
  • Commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments and specialties.
  • Evidence of successful program building.
  • Ability to collaboratively engage faculty across clinical practices for mutual benefit in program development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must possess an MD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the full professor level.
  • Be board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology and Hematology.
  • Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • Must have greater than 3 years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Have an additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.).
  • Demonstrate leadership in an academic department of Pathology.
  • Have experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services.
