Director, Student Information Systems and Support - South Campus

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Director of Student Systems and Support serves as the primary liaison for all student-related support within the Student Information Systems (SIS) and in strategically planning, developing, and integrating software technology to support student success. Key responsibilities include managing the student knowledge base for accuracy and accessibility, evaluating and enhancing the Banner Student System and Degree Works, and streamlining processes for student admission, enrollment, registration, and record maintenance. Additionally, the role oversees student technology initiatives, including the development of functional technology solutions, training programs, customer support mechanisms, and special projects. This position requires extensive knowledge of and proficiency in Banner/Ellucian technology and a commitment to improving student experiences and achieving institutional goals.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Oversees the college's student information technology systems including Banner Student Module, Banner Self-Service, and the degree audit software.
  • Consults with customers across the college service structure to discuss needs and solutions to all aspects of the College's degree audit software, Degree Works, including the implementation of new features, configuration management, and regular upgrades.
  • Manages projects, evaluates requests, and develops priorities for the implementation of new software solutions and current software improvements for College administration, Student Services, and instructional teams. Ensures project progress and timely completion.
  • Consults with end users across the College to discuss needs and recommend student software/technology solutions to improve efficiency. Collaborates with other team members to efficiently implement changes that align with SIS system.
  • Configures, enhances, and implements reporting and end user solutions as delivered by Ellucian Banner, Texas Connection Consortium (TCC), Banner, and Degree Works. Document changes being made in cooperation with impacted areas.
  • Liaison between end users of managed software and ITS for project creation, implementation and troubleshooting. Analyzes and evaluates existing system for performance, simulates and tests suggestions made for performance. Checks functionality of the end product.
  • Collaborates with instructional teams and the curriculum office to ensure accurate program planning, section creation, and advising template creation of curriculum programs.
  • Collaborates with Student Services leadership, Curriculum, Marketing, and other areas in the implementation and maintenance of CourseLeaf products CAT, CIM, and PATH.
  • Implements THECB-mandated and institutionally-required modifications for Student Success and Reporting.
  • Analyzes all Banner Student security requests and manages the Banner Student security procedures and creates plans for change based on analyzed requirements.


Additional Job Functions:



  • Interviews, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff through the performance management system. Makes appropriate staffing recommendations in accordance with College policies and procedures.
  • Develops, recommends, and manages office budget including P Card processes to ensure available dollars are effectively utilized. Ensures operational costs are in line with relevant budgetary controls. Completes payroll, leave, and travel processes.
  • Serves as College's liaison with Ellucian TCC and the National Student Clearinghouse and represents SJC, as required, by participating in state and local councils, committees, boards, organizations, and state and national conferences for Ellucian/Banner, Degree Works, and other related technologies.
  • Promotes excellence, creativity, leadership, cooperation, teamwork and accountability throughout the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Experience in data analysis, reporting, and utilizing metrics for decision-making and process improvements.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project planning, development, implementation, and analysis, including the development, testing, and implementation of new systems.
  • Proven ability to oversee the functional management and maintenance of student information systems and other technology platforms.
  • Experience leading a team of functional support staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations to motivate, mentor, and develop.
  • Ensure the effective delivery of technology support services including training and functional assistance.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with academic and administrative departments to identify and address technology needs and enhance service delivery.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues to a varied audience.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in educational technology to recommend and implement innovative solutions.
  • Develop and enforce procedures related to student technology use, data security, and privacy.
  • Posses strong analytical skills to monitor and analyze changes in technology, identify technical and process problems, and proactively provide recommendations for solutions that fit the direction of the campus's strategic plan.
  • Ability to Coordinate with external vendors and partners to ensure quality and timely delivery of services and products.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish personal and professional credibility with both internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to effectively interview, select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Solid strategic planning and operational implementation skills, with the ability to integrate and align strategy, people, and activities across functions, processes, and teams.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in higher education, particularly related to student services and technology.
  • Ability to safeguard sensitive or confidential information and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.

    • Texas State Reporting




Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Student Information Systems (SIS): Proficiency in using and managing student information systems, and understanding their functionalities and applications in a higher education context.
  • Network and Systems Security: Knowledge of network and information security best practices, particularly in the protection of student data and privacy.
  • User Experience (UX) Design: Insights into UX design principles to ensure that student-facing technologies are user-friendly and accessible.
  • Cloud Computing and Storage: Understanding of cloud-based services and storage solutions, and how they can be leveraged for educational purposes.


Required Education:



  • Bachelor's degree


Preferred Education:



  • Master's degree


Required Experience:



  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education administration, with a strong emphasis on student services and technology.
  • At least 3 years proven functional experience managing and implementing complex technology systems, such as Banner or Degree Works.
  • Extensive experience regarding degree completion requirements or curriculum management within a college or university
  • Demonstrated expertise using Banner to improve and automate business processes within the Registrar, Admissions, or Records office at a college or university
  • Experience in timeline and project management and/or implementation of business and functional requirements.


Preferred Experience:



  • Experience with CourseLeaf Software: CAT, CIM, or PATH
  • Experience as a Registrar or Associate Registrar
  • Additional Banner Module experience, i.e. Finance, HR, Financial Aid
