The Inpatient Clinical Coding Apprentice is an entry level coding position aimed at introducing an individuals to the inpatient coding experience. Incumbents are expected to learn coding rules, guidelines, classification systems and other relevant skills required to successfully code inpatient medical records. Responsibilities include learning and coding simple inpatient cases, learning and entering facility and professional charges for patient's admitted to facilities by way of the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

  • Growth and Development - Coding apprentices are expected to progress through learning different types of OP Coding within the first year. It is expected that will be able to navigate the medical record, understanding the different types of documentation needed for the service lines, and is able to code OP cases within the first few months, and move on to be fully proficient a complex service line by the end of their first year. The pace will be progressive.
  • Coding Expectations - Coders are expected to perform coding functions within departmental guidelines. Departmental guidelines include productivity expectations, goals, accurate use of coding statuses, work queues, stop bills and communication and relationship building with partner departments.
  • Coding Quality - Coders are expected to maintain a minimum quality score of 95% in in all aspects of their coding including diagnosis codes, CPT, PCS, etc. Coders are evaluated by both, internal audits and third party external audits.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High School Diploma required. Completion of a Medical Coding Program strongly preferred

EXPERIENCE

No coding experience required. Past experience in healthcare related fields preferred. Clinical experience is helpful but not required

LICENSURE

CPC-A or CPC or CCS-P or COC-A or COC preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and disease process acquired in educational program requirements. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to exercise good judgment, independent logic, light typing, and excellent computer data entry skills. Computer system experience helpful
