Overview:

We are seeking a Healthcare Data Analyst who will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in healthcare data management, statistical design and analysis, and reporting, to improve care quality, reduce costs, and enhance patient experience. This position resides in the Health Services Division, Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead SME for healthcare analytics activities for Health Services Division (HSD).
  • Consulting on strategic design and responsibility for performing data analytics to include data collection, cleaning, management, analysis, and visualization.
  • Execute projects and tasks as directed by the Division Director/Medical Director, HSD Group Leader, and HSD Compliance Officer.
  • Compiling and organizing healthcare data for purpose of analysis and reporting.
  • Converting data into usable information that is easy to understand.
  • Analyzing data to solve problems using experience and knowledge to deliver optimal healthcare management.
  • Understanding data storage and data sharing methods.
  • Work closely with senior technical staff on technical projects using data to drive solutions and streamlined practices.
  • Possessing strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Communicating analytic insights to management.
  • Independently working and solving technical problems and making recommendations to management through written reports or presentations.
  • Other duties supporting HSD needs at the discretion of division leadership based on education, training, and experience.

Basic Qualifications:

Analytics and Technical Skills

  • BS/BA degree in a scientific, statistical, mathematical, informatics, engineering, or related quantitatively oriented field.
  • Minimum 5 years prior experience in occupational health, industrial hygiene, or working with epidemiological data sets for analysis/surveillance environment.
  • Strong foundation in descriptive and inferential statistics, multivariate analysis, and applied statistical modeling in a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with longitudinal methods (e.g., mixed-effects models, generalized estimating equations [GEE], interrupted time series) and ability to adapt methods to diverse healthcare metric analysis.
  • Proficiency in survey design and statistical analysis.
  • Experience working in compliance-driven or DOE-regulated environments.
  • Facility with AI and large language models (LLM) tools to support analysis, documentation, reporting, and knowledge integration, consistent with data security and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience using statistical software and relational database management tools with at least four of:
    • Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
    • Excel (advanced; pivot tables, power inquiry)
    • JMP
    • Microsoft Access
    • Oracle Database
    • Python
    • R
    • REDCap
    • SAS
    • SPSS
    • SQL
    • STATA
    • AI Tools

Communication and Collaboration Skills

  • Understanding of healthcare operations, terminology, and multi-disciplinary healthcare functions.
  • Strong systems analysis and process-optimization skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to explain complex information to multiple audiences in written and oral delivery.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaborative relationships and serving as the lead SME in this field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, health informatics, applied mathematics, statistics, systems engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar business intelligence tools.
  • Training and certification in Lean Six Sigma.
  • Staying current on relevant occupational health and metric literature and critically apply design and statistical analysis in ongoing work.
  • Familiarity with medical surveillance, exposure monitoring, and large administrative datasets.
  • Experience developing reproducible analytic code and workflow.
  • Ability to perform scripting in common statistical software packages.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g. American Statistical Association [ASA]. National Association for Healthcare Quality [NAHQ], etc.) and/or professional certifications from relevant organizations; these may be used to demonstrate professional engagement or advanced competency.

Advanced Skills Development Expectation

  • Candidates lacking expertise in longitudinal methods, complex healthcare study design, coding, and AI-enabled analytic tools are expected to demonstrate these competencies within 18 months of hire through formal graduate-level coursework or professional certification; this may also be demonstrated by completing an additional relevant graduate degree within 24 months of hire.
