Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Facility Services is seeking an experienced Accountant 3 to support the financial operations of Utility Services.

Utility Services is responsible for maintenance of the University's district energy system providing electricity, steam, chilled water and domestic water through its own distribution systems. Additionally, the department processes and allocates all vendor utilities invoices to the appropriate departments.

The qualified candidate will perform advanced, multifaceted accounting and related functions in such areas as ledger maintenance and analysis, cost and/or financial analysis, fund reconciliation, posting, and payroll. Analyzes complex financial and operating data and prepares management reports, financial statements, and projections.

The Facility Services division-comprising Building & Landscape Services, Facilities Design & Construction, Facilities Customer Services, Facilities Support Services and Technical Services-is responsible for maintaining more than 10 million square feet of facilities and 680 acres of open space.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Oversees daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures by departments; reviews and reports financial transactions to funding sources; ensures accuracy, completeness, and compliance with university, local, state, and federal requirements, and standard accounting and audit procedures.
  2. Monitors and maintains key accounting information for the operating unit within the finance system.
  3. Interprets and analyzes financial operations and transactions, forecasts trends, and develops special complex reports and analyses for management and funding agencies; makes recommendations for asset utilization and expenditure control.
  4. Monitors and maintains appropriate revenue levels by actions such as letter of credit draw downs and cost reimbursement or fee-for-service billings; oversees major liability accounts for the organization.
  5. Designs complex accounting and database applications for personal computers; balances and maintains ledgers for the automated financial and human resource management systems.
  6. If in a core office, monitors and maintains appropriate revenue levels by actions such as letter of credit draw downs and cost reimbursement or fee-for-service billings; oversees major liability accounts for the organization.
  7. May supervise personnel which may include recommendations for hiring, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  8. May serve on University committees that develop accounting policies and procedures.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  1. BA in Accounting or Finance
  2. Demonstrated ability in financial account reconciliations
  3. Proficient in the use of MS Excel
  4. Experience working with UNM financial programs such as Chrome River, MyReports, LoboTime, and Banner (including data uploads, ePrint, and NSAR billings).
  5. Effective time management skills to prioritize multiple ongoing work tasks and meet regular deadlines.
  6. Experience processing payroll.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively with other departments.
  8. Effective research and analytical skills to investigate account discrepancies.
  9. Experience in preparing various financial reports.
  10. Ability to process various accounting transactions (Journal Entries (JE), Journal Vouchers (JV), invoice batch payments, funds transfers)
