Position Description:

The Gerstner Research Group in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Iowa welcomes applications for a postdoctoral research scholar position. The successful candidate will work on the synthesis of molecules to be used for biological applications. The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong foundation in multi-step synthesis of organic molecules and standard spectroscopic techniques (e.g., NMR, Mass spectrometry, and UV-vis spectroscopy) necessary for characterizing new molecules. The position is for one year with the potential for extension for an additional year and would have a flexible start date of July 1, 2026.Work authorization sponsorship in J-1 status is available for this position.

Depending on the candidate's background and interests, research activities may include:





  • Synthesis of complex biologically active natural products with unique scaffolds.
  • Development, synthesis and evaluation of novel photocatalysts for protein labeling applications.




Responsibilities:





  • Manage their own research project(s).
  • Maintain detailed record keeping of their experiments in lab notebooks.
  • Maintain equipment in the laboratory.
  • Write up new results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students with their projects.
  • Stay informed of new literature related to academic research project(s).
  • Present new results in weekly group meetings.


Education Requirement:


  • PhD or equivalent in chemistry or a closely related field, with a strong background in organic synthesis, is required.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Experience designing and carrying out multi-step syntheses of organic molecules.
  • Experience characterizing organic molecules with spectroscopic techniques.
  • Good English writing and speaking skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • A strong commitment to research excellence.
