The JC Raulston Arboretum is a nationally acclaimed public garden with one of the largest and most diverse collections of landscape plants adapted for landscape use in the Southeast. Part of its mission is to trial and evaluate new plant material for their most beneficial economic, ecological, and aesthetic value as well as host a collection of rare and unique plant specimens. As such, the
JCRA is renowned for sharing its passion and knowledge of plants with the green industry, the horticulture community, and the general public.
The JC Raulston Arboretum is seeking to replace a retiring member of the Horticulture Team. This position will work closely with the Horticulture Team and have a key focus on supporting the JCRA's nursery operations, plant distributions, and research efforts.
This position is critical for sustaining the current nursery operations through monitoring, caring for and maintaining best practices for growing plant material in the
JCRA greenhouses and nursery area. They also support plant distributions by organizing and tracking plant material designated for distributions and collections. The position also assists with the coordination, execution and data collection for the JCRA's Color Trials and other research programs.
Responsibilities also include maintaining plant records, greenhouse and nursery conditions, and other various tasks that support the mission of the
JCRA.
Ideal candidate would have experience with
IPM, best practice growing conditions for greenhouses and nursery settings, irrigation systems, detail oriented with keen observation skills, comfort with scientific nomenclature and excellent plant knowledge.
Key Responsibilities of this role:
- Assist in maintaining good growing conditions in JCRA's nursery spaces.
- Assist with propagation and growing plants for distribution in alignment with the JCRA's mission, vision and goals
- Scout and identify pest and plant health issues
- Engage with guests in a friendly and enthusiastic way and answer questions when in the garden
- Work with volunteers as well as lead Horticulture interns and other student workers
- Assist in the overall success of the JCRA by being part of large events, member and volunteer events and other organization programs
- Ability to make basic greenhouse repairs
- Other duties as assigned
Work Schedule:
15-20 hours/week; Flexible schedule but will take place during business hours, Monday- Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Occasional night or weekend hours as needed. |
