Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Director or designee, the Maintenance Co-Generation Engineer II supervises the maintenance and repair of 13,000 volt main circuit breakers and steam, electricity, and chilled water systems. Operates as Shift Supervisor Operations as necessary leading a team of three other engineers through 12 hour shifts meeting load demands, weather changes, equipment outages, optimizing efficiency, and coordinating with facilities operations.



Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all power plant equipment including two 1100 psig and two 250 psig boilers, 5000 kw and two 2500 kw turbine generators, electric and diesel air compressors, 4000 ton electric, 5000 ton and three 2500 ton turbine driven chillers, 7500 kw combustion turbine and 1100 psig heat recovery steam generator, 400 psig gas compressor, pumps, motors and all other related equipment auxiliaries.
  • Supervises the operation of an assigned watch for the production of steam power, electric power and refrigeration. Coordinates with Mass Electric when switching incoming power lines and generation of electricity.
  • Supervises and operates 1100 psig heat recovery steam generator, two 1100 psig and two 250 psig steam boilers with super-heaters, economizes and auxiliary equipment.
  • Supervises and operates 7500 kw combustion turbine, 5000 kw and two 2500 kw steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries, synchronizing the generators when necessary, synchronizing Mass Electric's cables with the generator when necessary. Logs observations. Supervises, performs minor electrical functions (changes fuses, bulbs, checks circuit breakers) etc.
  • Supervises power demand and consumption making required adjustments for power factor correction, frequency and voltage.
  • Supervises and Operates 4000 ton electric, 5000 ton and three 2500 ton turbine driven chillers, evaporators, chilled water pumps, condensers, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries.
  • Supervises and operates four (4) electrical power systems, namely, the Uninterrupted Power System, the normal 13,800 volts power distribution system from the utility company, the emergency power system from the standby diesel generator, and the power generated by the power plant
  • Supervises and operation of all centrifugal compressors, motors, condensing steam turbine-driven, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries. Logs observations.
  • Supervises the operation of six (6) cooling tower and fans serving the turbine and refrigeration systems.
  • Oversee equipment start up and shutdown based on load response and weather conditions.
  • Monitor boiler emission controls and water chemistry.
  • Emergency diesel generator operations according to JACHO standards.
  • Ensure safety standards compliance (LOTO, Arc flash, PPE, etc.)
  • Aligns Power Plant equipment according to ICETEC market dispatches.
  • Supervises fuel and ammonia unloading.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
  • While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold a Massachusetts Second Class Engineer's License or higher.
  • 2-4 years' experience in modern power plant, operating turbine generators, or steam driven chiller experience.
  • Should possess thorough knowledge of, and ability to maintain and repair, all power plant related equipment with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Possess some welding and machine shop experience.
  • Possess the theory and application of good safety practices around high pressure, high voltage systems (13,800 volts), and rotating equipment.
  • Possess the theory, application and experience in the operation of maintenance of refrigeration and condensing steam turbine-driven centrifugal compressors, evaporators, condensers and related equipment
  • Possess the theory, application and experience of large high pressure boilers equipped with super heaters, economizers dual fuel systems, pneumatic combustion controls and flame scanners.
  • Possess the theory, application and experience in the operation of a combustion turbine, heat recovery steam boiler, and gas compressor.
  • Possess a theoretical knowledge of thermodynamics principals and their application to steam and refrigeration equipment and systems.
  • Possess the ability to solve complex operational problems independent of supervision and to assume responsibility for the critical life-support systems.


Additional Information

All Power Plant Operations staff are required to comply with UMass Chan's Inspection and Maintenance Plan filed with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities Pipeline Safety Division. This plan must be reviewed as part of annual training.
