General Description

The Field and Survey Engineer will supervise surveyors for multiple projects, construction layouts, as-built surveys, development of drawings and any other surveys as needed in support of construction.

Key Duties



  • Provides survey calculations for survey teams to perform field operations.
  • QC field measurements performed by field survey team.
  • Provides construction layout as requested by supervision including control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts (i.e. forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports, etc.)
  • Survey the existing conditions of the future work site to prevent conflicts with utility lines such as drainage pipes, electric ducts etc.
  • Provides layout with control lines and elevations that are required for construction by staking points and line locations, offsets and reference points.
  • Provides topographic and cross-section surveys as required for planning and payment quantities.
  • Provide quantity calculations as required.
  • Verifies location of structures during construction.
  • Provides As-Built surveying and verifies that work was completed in accordance with the specifications set plans.
  • Locates, creates, and maintains control points and Benchmarks (BM) in project area.
  • Ensures proper survey methods are used by all crew members. Check all work for accuracy.
  • Reviews all crew generated data to ensure accuracy.
  • Investigates and provides solutions to field survey problems.
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, leads, motivates, and evaluates the work of others.
  • Supervises surveying technician and surveying trainee personnel.
  • Coordinates surveying activities with the assigned Engineer to meet construction requirements.
  • Prepares documentation of survey activities. Reads and checks construction set plans and reports any mistake or problem found in them.
  • Prepares clear, concise, and complete reports.
  • Maintains good condition and adjustment of survey equipment.

Education and Experience. This position is typically not an entry-level job.



  • Requires demonstrable previous experience as a Survey Engineer.
  • 5+ years survey experience in construction highway projects is required.
  • Knowledge of construction technique and practices, paving, underground, concrete, and grading required.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to effectively work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Have or be able to obtain a Part 107 Drone Pilots license.


Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Field and Survey Engineer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.



  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
  • Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
  • Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise.
  • Work can be performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).


Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Field and Survey Engineer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.



  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
