Job Summary


The Senior Epic Operational Database Administrator (ODBA) serves as a technical expert responsible for the architecture, performance, availability, and lifecycle management of the Epic operational database environment. This role ensures the reliability, scalability, and security of the Epic database platform supporting UCSF's electronic health record system.

The Senior ODBA oversees the installation, configuration, optimization, and maintenance of Epic databases, including InterSystems IRIS/Cache environments, storage integrations, and high-availability architectures. The role continuously monitors database performance, manages upgrades and patches, and ensures compliance with Epic and UCSF standards.

As a senior technical authority, this position leads database architecture planning, disaster recovery readiness, and performance optimization initiatives across UCSF's Epic infrastructure. The Senior ODBA collaborates closely with infrastructure, storage, network, and application teams to ensure the Epic platform operates at peak reliability and performance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The annual salary range for this position is $113,800-242,800. Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc., are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union. The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including systems, databases, and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages enterprise databases, Oracle, SQL, and other defined databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree, or four years of experience in following fields: computer engineering, information systems or computer science.
  • Five or more years of Epic Operational Database Administration, InterSystems IRIS / Cache database administration, enterprise database or administration supporting Epic environments.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in information technology, platform services, or Epic systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Epic operational database architecture including InterSystems IRIS/Cache platforms, database performance tuning, and Epic database utilities.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to Epic systems and associated hardware. Highly skilled in performing system updates, patches, and upgrades.
  • Proficient in Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems, including command-line interfaces and system administration tasks.
  • Advanced knowledge of networking principles, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN. Understanding of network security practices and protocols.
  • Extensive understanding with virtualization technologies such as IBM LPAR, VMware, Hyper-V, or similar platforms
  • Advanced knowledge of database administration concepts including storage architecture, database performance tuning, backup and recovery, and high-availability design for Epic environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA) and best practices for data security and privacy. Understanding of security protocols and tools used to protect sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze system performance metrics and identify trends or potential issues.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Extensive experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and propose innovative ideas, including the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Is able to work with agility in a fast-paced environment.
