Job Summary
The Traveling Lead Data Center Technician serves as the onsite lead for structured cabling and fiber installation projects within large-scale, hyperscale data center environments. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with crew leadership and project coordination responsibilities. The Lead Technician oversees fiber and copper infrastructure installations, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards. This position requires travel to active job sites and the ability to lead by example while maintaining productivity, safety compliance, and team accountability. Job Responsibilities
Install structured cabling infrastructure, including fiber rough-in and cable routing
Perform fiber and copper cable termination, ribbon and fusion splicing, and connector installation (ST, LC, SC, SC-APC)
Conduct Fluke, OTDR, and continuity testing and perform fiber troubleshooting
Install and configure single-mode and multi-mode fiber systems
Rack and stack equipment, build server racks, and complete rack elevations
Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, power trays, and cable management systems
Execute Outside Plant (OSP) installations and route fiber into data center facilities
Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation
Receive, inventory, and assemble materials and hardware
Perform quality control inspections to ensure installations meet project and safety standards
Lead daily crew assignments and provide clear direction based on superintendent or project leadership guidance
Conduct daily safety meetings, stretch and flex sessions, and enforce OSHA and PPE compliance
Monitor crew productivity, quality, and adherence to installation standards
Perform daily jobsite walks to ensure safety, quality, and production targets are met
Facilitate end-of-day meetings to review progress, address issues, and plan next-day activities
Manage material usage and forecast labor needs
Coordinate with project management regarding blueprint updates and change orders
Maintain professional communication with team members, contractors, and stakeholders
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED
Minimum 5 years of experience as a Data Center Technician
Minimum 5 years of fiber installation experience, including fusion and ribbon splicing
Minimum 3 years of experience in telecommunications or a related technical field
Minimum 6 months of supervisory or managerial experience
Demonstrated ability to manage crews of up to 12 team members
Proven ability to terminate fiber and interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality documentation
Knowledge of universal communications color codes
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project), MS Teams, Adobe, and Bluebeam preferred
Active OSHA 10 certification preferred
Must meet minimum driving standards
Ability to work at heights, on ladders and scissor lifts, and in confined spaces
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs, and stand for extended shifts
Must possess and effectively use required hand tools and testing equipment, including punch-down tools, crimp tools, volt-ohm meters, continuity testers, butt set, and related telecom installation tools
Must provide required personal protective equipment, including steel-toe or composite-toe boots, gloves, and tool pouch
Work Experience
Experience in colocation or new construction data center environments required
Experience working in active construction job sites and job site trailer environments preferred
Prior experience leading crews in large-scale commercial or hyperscale facilities strongly preferred
