POSITION SPECIFICS

The Penn State School of Music seeks an Assistant Director for Engagement and Outreach to support strategic initiatives that connect performance, academic programs, and public engagement.

The Assistant Director for Engagement and Outreach will play a key role in coordinating complex projects, advancing community- and audience-facing initiatives, and supporting the operational and strategic work of a comprehensive music school within a major public research university.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the School of Music, which brings people together around music, creativity, and learning.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support School-level strategic priorities through planning, coordination, and implementation of complex initiatives.

  • Translate broad goals into actionable plans across multiple concurrent musical projects, including performances, special events, recording projects, and outreach activities.

  • Coordinate planning logistics and timelines for major School of Music events, academic milestones, and community-facing initiatives.

  • Serve as a central point of coordination for multi-stakeholder musical projects involving faculty, staff, students, facilities, and external partners.

  • Coordinate schedules across faculty, facilities, and support units to reduce conflicts and optimize resources.

  • Support engagement with alumni, donors, guest artists, and community partners in collaboration with the Director and development staff.

  • Assist with operational workflows, identifying challenges and recommending practical solutions to improve systems and communication.

  • Support tracking of budgets, expenditures, and resources related to programs and initiatives.

  • May supervise staff, student employees, or project teams, as appropriate.

The Assistant Director for Engagement and Outreach will be regularly required to work evenings and weekendsto assist with the School of Music events and other audience-facing initiatives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience providing administrative or program support in a professional setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, balance competing priorities, and work effectively across multiple stakeholder groups.

  • Inclusive and respectful when working with others.

  • Outstanding organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in higher education, performing arts organizations, or cultural institutions.

  • Experience supporting strategic planning, program development, or large-scale events.

  • Familiarity with community engagement, fundraising support, or grant-related activities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Performing Arts Operations Specialist - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Performing Arts Operations Specialist - Intermediate Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $51,000.00 - $81,500.00.
