Job Description:
We"re seeking an entrylevel Reliability Engineer on a longterm contract to service, maintain, and support complex automation systems in a highthroughput production environment. This handson role focuses on troubleshooting and repairing PLCs, robots, conveyors, VFDs, sensors, pneumatics/hydraulics, and related controls while supporting preventive maintenance and reliability improvements. Ideal for earlycareer technicians or engineers who prefer contract work and want sustained exposure to automation systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform routine and reactive servicing, troubleshooting, and repair of automated production equipment (PLCs, HMIs, industrial robots, conveyors, VFDs, sensors, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, instrumentation).
Execute and refine preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) tasks; follow and update PM procedures.
Rapidly diagnose breakdowns, implement corrective actions, and document failures to prevent repeat events.
Assist in commissioning, calibration, and testing of new or upgraded automation systems under direction.
Read and interpret electrical/mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, and control drawings.
Use hand tools and electrical test equipment (multimeter, clamp meter, insulation tester, etc.) safely and effectively.
Maintain accurate records and equipment history in the CMMS; manage spare parts usage and recommendations.
Collect failure data to support reliability analyses (FMEA, RCM) and improvement projects.
Follow all site safety procedures (LOTO, PPE, NFPA 70E awareness as applicable) and contribute to a safe working environment.
Coordinate with production, engineering, and vendor technicians; escalate issues in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications:
Relevant technical experience in industrial maintenance, automation, or controls - a degree is not required; equivalent handson experience, technical diploma, or military training is acceptable.
0-3 years" experience (internships and coops count).
Basic familiarity with PLC platforms (AllenBradley, Siemens, etc.), HMIs, and ladder logic concepts.
Practical experience or coursework with electrical components, motors, sensors, pneumatics, and mechanical systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation, reporting, and CMMS exports.
Comfortable using diagnostic/test equipment and following electrical/mechanical schematics.
Strong troubleshooting instincts, excellent verbal and written communication, and proven problemsolving ability - must be able to collaborate effectively with crossfunctional teams.
Able to work shifts, overtime, and participate in an oncall rotation as required.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills:
Basic PLC programming or logic debugging experience.
Familiarity with SolidWorks CAD software is highly desirable (for reading or preparing simple assembly/installation drawings).
Some exposure to industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet), VFD setup, and industrial robotics basics (ABB, Fanuc, KUKA).
Familiarity with CMMS systems (Maximo, SAP PM) and condition monitoring tools (vibration, thermography).
OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E awareness, or manufacturerspecific PLC/robotics certifications.
Physical Requirements:
This position is considered physically demanding. Candidates must be able to:
Climb ladders and work in and around machinery during installation and servicing.
Perform elevated work and access tight spaces with proper PPE and training.
Lift and carry objects up to 60 lbs regularly.
Stand, kneel, bend, and climb for extended periods in a manufacturing environment.
Communication & Teamwork:
Must be a great communicator and problem solver, capable of clearly explaining technical issues and solutions to production, engineering, and vendor teams.
Comfortable documenting work and handing off tasks during shift changes.
