Overview

To plan, develop, manage, and implement a public affairs plan reflective of Navy Federal's public reputation and conducive to diverse external audiences for all channels (media, Corporate Social Channels, NFO, print, radio, and TV). Provide leadership to credit union management to develop public affairs campaign strategies and metrics promoting effective and maximum visibility for Navy Federal. Serve as a primary corporate spokesperson, related to public affairs, issues management and local/regional support. Exercise independent judgment and work on issues of diverse scope.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing a multi-year strategic public affairs plan to maximize Navy Federal's brand awareness in mainstream media, social media channels and Navy Federal online properties and ensure alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Manage the Corporate Crisis Communication Plan and future communication strategies aligned with industry peers
  • Anticipate and identify existing and emerging public relations challenges and consult with senior leadership to define, develop, and execute effective strategies to resolve and support communications needs, opportunities, and solutions as it relates to public affairs.
  • Assist in developing a matrix of decision making and ensure integration of business and marketing strategic plans for all communications channels related to issues management and public affairs.
  • Collaborate with multiple internal business units to ensure alignment of strategies and tactics, and the development and performance of the analytics and metrics framework
  • Collaborate with business partners to identify and recommend operational improvements and to develop and implement strategies and initiatives for process efficiencies
  • Build and maintain relationships with team members, management, key stakeholders and/or external contacts (vendors, etc.)
  • Oversee the development of public affairs plans, acquires executive management approval, and presents analysis of performance/effectiveness against campaign goals
  • Oversee generation of news releases, press kits and social media development of public affairs campaigns
  • Provide governance support for all enterprise communications channels and ensures that all credit union business adheres to the rules of engagement
  • Develop and present recommendations to ensure and/or improve favorable member and employee experience to include appropriate tone, sentiment, and accurate messaging and to meet service level agreement commitments
  • Make presentations to strategic external contacts in the credit union industry, media, military and other audiences
  • Provide Board of Directors, CEO, and other senior management with necessary reports/updates
  • Promote a public affairs program that facilitates skillful negotiation of interactions between Navy Federal and strategic external audiences, including the media, corporate partners, and/or industry contemporaries
  • Bring external perspective and ideas from relevant sources, stay current with technology as well as, government/policy impacts and industry best practices
  • Stay abreast of and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines as it relates to public affairs
  • Oversee reputation management, third-party/vendor amplification, and corporate awards program
  • Coordinate across departments for issues management and facilitate/plan member-issue resolutions
  • Develop enterprise thought leadership platform for public positioning for subject matter experts
  • Lead team responsible for establishing, promoting, and protecting Navy Federal's brand and reputation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Experience in developing/managing large corporate public and media relations programs, communications and social media campaigns and related budgets
  • Advanced knowledge of public affairs, political communications and/or policy issues within national, state, or local government, campaigns, consulting firms, nonprofits, or in the private sector
  • Experience in designing and executing multifaceted communication campaigns, preferably in a corporate setting
  • Experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative-taking, decision-making and creativity solving business problems
  • Experience in planning, developing, and executing communication plans around crisis communication events that may have reputational impact
  • Experience in supervising and leading professional employees
  • Experience in working with all levels of staff, management, stakeholders, vendors
  • Experience managing cross-functional, multi-dimensional teams and projects of the highest complexity which have business risk and impact
  • Experience managing multiple priorities independently and/or in a team environment to achieve goals
  • Experience demonstrating creativity in promotional and informal writing
  • Significant experience with print and online writing and editing
  • Working knowledge of media operations, specialized publications, and editorial practices
  • Working knowledge of banking/financial industry trends, products and services
  • Advanced skill to influence, negotiate and persuade to reach agreeable exchange and positive outcomes
  • Advanced skill building effective relationships through rapport, trust, diplomacy and tact
  • Advanced public speaking skills
  • Advanced skill to successfully influence, lead and/or guide others towards goals
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced organizational, planning and time management skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a related field such as Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience
  • Working knowledge of compliance issues affecting Navy Federal and the credit union movement
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and financial regulations and compliance protocol
  • Working knowledge of Navy Federal products, services, programs, policies and procedures
